Mission The Urban Studies major is an interdisciplinary program focused on the institutions, culture, and social environments of the city. A Bachelor of Arts degree in Urban Studies is offered upon completion of the university baccalaureate and major requirements. The urban studies major requires the completion of 30 units, 15 of which are required core courses. Core courses include offerings from the departments of Sociology, Art, History, Government, and Social Science, and the Cook School of Intercultural Studies. An additional 15 units must be taken from courses within the Social Science Group and the Art and Culture Group, with a minimum of 3 units from each group. Develops the ability of our students to understand the urban environment in a systematic way: socially, culturally, theologically, and ecologically. • Will provide opportunities for students to develop professional relationships with different social, cultural, and ministry agencies in Los Angeles. • Will provide and encourage a critically informed and Christian response to the development of the city as a central human organizing institution. • Utilizes a wealth of field research and experiential learning opportunities to deepen students' understanding of the 21st century global city. • Helps students to develop field research abilities through the field research requirements of this course. • Provides students with a broader perspective to understand the social and cultural heritage of urban settings, and to understand how this affects their lives and the lives of urban inhabitants. • Uses Los Angeles to provide students with a familiarity with various people, institutions, organizations, and programs that relate to their ultimate career goals in such areas as ministry, social services, community development, etc. Learning Outcomes The Urban Studies Program: • Urban Studies Degree Program A Bachelor of Arts degree in Urban Studies is offered upon completion of the University baccalaureate and major requirements.
