ENGL 151 - English for the Non-Native Speaker: Foundations of Academic Writing Practice in accurate summarizing, paraphrasing, and quoting of sources with proper citation, avoiding plagiarism. Development of library research, note taking, and proper formatting of research papers. Intensive practice in punctuation and mechanics. If this is the first ELSP course required, it must be taken during the first semester of residence. Fee: Writing Lab $25. Unit(s): 4. ENGL 152 - English for the Non-Native Speaker: Oral Skills Emphasis on listening skills, pronunciation, intonation, and conversational strategies. Weekly interviews, field work and oral presentations are required. If this is the first ELSP course required, it must be taken during the first semester of residence. Unit(s): 3. ENGL 161 - English for the Non-Native Speaker: Essay & Academic Writing Studies in essay organization and development and critical reading. If this is the first ELSP course required, it must be taken during the first semester of residence. Prerequisite(s): 151 and 152 or department placement. Fee: Writing Lab $25. Unit(s): 3. ENGL 171 - English for the Non-Native Speaker: Writing Workshop Individualized instruction in essay organization and coherence with special attention to persistent errors. A passing grade of “B” permits students to enroll in departmental writing courses (i.e., undergraduate English ENGL 100 or Talbot TTSS 500) the semester immediately following successful completion of 171. Prerequisite(s): 161 or department placement. Note(s): Students who are taking ENGL 171 for the second time or more will be restricted to a maximum of 12 units for undergraduate students and 9 units for graduate students. Fee: Writing Lab $25. EILI 132 - Reading An intermediate course in understanding written American English. Unit(s): 3. EILI 133 - Grammar/Oral An intermediate course in understanding and using American English grammar in both oral and written form. Unit(s): 3. EILI 134 - Speaking II An intermediate course in using American English for oral communication. Unit(s): 2. EILI 136 - Writing An intermediate course in using American English for writing. Unit(s): 3. ENGL 141 - Academic Listening Practice in understanding, following and taking notes on authentic academic lectures. Unit(s): 3. ENGL 142 - Reading Continued practice of the skills taught in EILI 132. Readings are more authentic and require more sustained reading. Unit(s): 3. ENGL 143 - Grammar/Oral Review of all grammar structures in oral and written form. Unit(s): 3. ENGL 144 - Effective Communication For non-native speakers desiring to improve their academic communication skills. Activities are designed to teach class discussion, group discussion and presentation skills. Unit(s): 2. ENGL 145 - TOEFL An elective course for non-native speakers desiring practice for the TOEFL examination. Unit(s): 2.
