Science degree in Biological Science offers a concentration in General Biology and one in Premed / Pre-Health Care Professional. Note All Biological Science majors automatically meet the general education requirement of eight units of science and mathematics. The foreign language requirement is met by two years in high school or the first four units in college. Philosophy 215, Introduction to Ethics, is strongly recommended for all biological science majors. The student should be aware that most graduate programs and many health care professional schools require an overall minimum GPA of 3.0 and that a grade of ”C” or better was earned for all science courses. Biological Science: General Biology Concentration (70+ Units) A minimum of forty-three units from the Department of Biological Sciences, including: • BIOS 111 - General Biology I Unit(s): 3. • BIOS 113 - General Biology I Laboratory Unit(s): 1. • BIOS 112 - General Biology II Unit(s): 3. • BIOS 114 - General Biology II Laboratory Unit(s): 1. • BIOS 200 - Sophomore Writing Seminar Unit(s): 1. • BIOS 222 - Botany Unit(s): 4. • BIOS 312 - Cell & Molecular Biology Unit(s): 3. • BIOS 322 - Laboratory in Cell & Molecular Biology Unit(s): 2. • BIOS 332 - Genetics Unit(s): 4. • BIOS 401 - General Ecology Unit(s): 4. Mission & Learning Outcomes The mission of the Department of Biological Sciences at Biola University is to provide an academically stimulating and challenging environment for intellectual and spiritual growth; preparing students to pursue careers as scientists, health care professionals, and teachers. Our goal is that upon graduation each student will be able to demonstrate: 1. A knowledge of the practice of science and scientific methodology; 2. An understanding and knowledge of the biomolecular basis of life; 3. An understanding of the diversity of organismal form, structure and function, and the relationship of the organisms to one another and the environment; 4. An understanding of the integration of faith and learning as it relates to the biological sciences through the lens of intelligent design, and to practice as good stewards of creation. Admission Recommendations Recommended high school courses are: one year of biology, one year of chemistry, three years of mathematics, and two years of foreign language. One year of physics is desirable. English Requirements Students wishing to enroll in any courses in the Biological Sciences must be eligible to take English 112 or 113 or must have the permission of the instructor to take the course. Writing Competency The department of Biological Sciences has a two part writing competency requirement. The first part is a timed writing session during which students select one topic from a list of topics chosen by the faculty to write on. This first part can be completed in BIOS 200, Sophomore Writing Seminar. The second part is submission of a class writing assignment from one of the following courses: • BIOS 312, Cell & Molecular Biology • BIOS 332, Genetics • BIOS 380, Advanced Microbiology • BIOS 382, Vertebrate Physiology • BIOS 401, General Ecology • BIOS 431, Developmental Biology • BIOS 450, Directed Research Other upper division coursework may be used with the consent of the faculty. Please see Human Biology: Pre-Chiropractic for details on the Writing Competency requirements of this concentration
