even theater as well. “I attended Sheridan College in Toronto when I was 18,” she ex- plained. “I was studying in theater art.” From there, the young artist then travelled with several theater troupes throughout the 1980s, performing in several plays. The artist moved back to the SD & G re- gion when she met her then husband who was a Cornwall native. “Although we are separated, I decided to stay in Cornwall, simply because I love this community.” When she’s not rehearsing or performing with her band, The Roxanne Delage Band , the artist is hard at work in her studio. “It’s a repurposed garage and it’s great,” she said. “It serves for anything art related.” It’s in the said garage that magic is crea- ted. Utilizing every sort of music she likes, Delage creates what she calls adult contem- porary. “It’s a mixture of everything,” she proudly said. “There are a lot of people who approachme and askme what kind of genre it is.” Her first album, entitled The Way I am , was well received by the community. So
much so that the singer is currently working on a second one, currently called Volume Two , for lack of a name. Cornwall’s art community is growing According to the artist, Cornwall’s once seemingly dormant art community was awoken following the demise of Domtar. “It seems that after Domtar closed down, seve- ral flowers started sprouting in Cornwall, all of themartists,” she elegantly explained. “Art in Cornwall was at one time a sneaky thing. We’re coming out of our cocoons. The city has a fabulous art movement!” The music scene has also evolved quite a bit, much to the astonishment of Delage. “There are just somany venues in this town now,” she said emotionally. “I’mvery proud of the many restaurants for paying musi- cians for what they are worth. Even the city is hiring musicians all summer long!”

Armed with her guitar, Roxanne Delage can often be seen performing in themany venues of Cornwall. The love of not onlymusic but the whole world of arts runs deep in the Alexandria native. “I come from a family that loved music,” she explained. “My mother loved Elvis. In fact, Elvis and my mother are both my first and biggest inspirations.” She obtained her first guitar at the age of 16 and, soon afterwards, was composing songs. She idolized early female songwriters and was part of several cover bands. Her passion for any art medium has led her to travel to several Canadian cities. “I’ve been to somany places,” she admitted with a slight laugh. “I counted, and I’ve concluded that I have moved more than 50 times!” Although her musical talent is well known throughout the community, Delage also stresses that she performs visual arts and

BernieMartel’s 1955 Pontiac sure is a head turner. It took himeight years to it. Martel has owned the vehicle for 15 years. “I worked on it every weekend,” Martel explained. “It’s originally a two-tone color car, but I painted it champion blue.” Sporting a 261 under the hood, the four-door machine recently won the Seaway GMC award at the Avonmore Fair. “I love the car and so does my wife!” stressed Martel, laughing.
