Dear Friends and Fellow Cattlemen, We would like to welcome you to our 14th annual production sale. Each year this event allows us an opportunity to reflect on how our business and cattle have progressed, and we sincerely feel that the most rewarding part has been the relationships we have formed with fellow cattlemen and women that wake up and live this same life as us. We do not take lightly the trust you put in our program as a source of genetics for your herd. These are certainly the best of times to be in the cattle business. And while we should enjoy the ride, we don’t want to lose focus on the type of cow that can be profitable when we find ourselves at other points in the cattle cycle. For us, that is a female that can calve on her own, breed back quickly, and raise valuable pounds of calf without requiring lots of inputs and labor to do it. As we shifted our herd from spring to fall calving over the last few years, it required us to have a brutal focus on fertility, and we are now seeing the results of that selection pressure at preg check. Likewise, the change from the calving barn to a hands-off setting in the pasture has demanded cows and heifers with the physical ability and maternal instinct to calve and mother on their own, and we see the results of this pass/ fail selection at both calving time and at weaning. We believe our job as breeders is to challenge our herd, see who rises to the top, and market cattle from those cows that have proven they can thrive in our environment. With this in mind, we feel the bulls and females in this catalog represent some of our best cow fam- ilies and will breed true to this genetic philosophy. This year our sale will feature bulls, open yearling heifers, and a number of embryo packages with exciting potential to enhance your breeding program. The bulls have been developed sensibly on a high forage ration with space to roam and exercise, and we have done everything we can to provide up-to-date and accurate information to assist you in your purchasing decisions. Bulls are performance tested, genomic tested, and will undergo a breeding soundness exam prior to sale date. We understand that the most important step in genetic improve- ment is the creation of pregnant cows, and all bulls sell with a full guarantee of fertility through their first breeding season. Our sale will be held again on the first Friday in March. Cattle will be grouped for display at the farm the morning of the 6th, and the sale will be in the format of a video auction held at the Lester Community Center, which is a 2-mile drive south of the farm. You are welcome to stop in and view the cattle any time prior to the sale as well. We want you to feel comfortable with the animals you purchase, and we would love to go through them with you and provide you with any additional information you need. Thank you for your interest and support, and we look forward to seeing you on sale day. Sincerely, Mark & Audrey Metzger // Scott & Joni Metzger Welcome
