FREDERICK CHARLES STANDISH (1824-1883) Standish was a British army captain, a racing and betting enthusiast, and was Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police from 1858-1880. He was a member of the Victoria Turf Club and a foundation Committee member of its successor, the Victoria Racing Club, in 1864, serving as VRC Chairman from 1879 until his passing. Some historians credit Mr Standish with initiating the idea of the Melbourne Cup, first run in 1861, through his association with the VTC.
