Managing the messy mix: The geopolitics of energy system transformation Room 1.05

The world is still dealing with the fallout from a global energy crisis, sparked by the conflict in Ukraine. This crisis is unfolding alongside mounting signs of climate change, evident in the surge of extreme weather events. As the primary contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, the global energy system is at the heart of environmental concerns. Recognising this, global leaders at COP-28 in Dubai last November agreed to transition away from fossil fuels, but what are the risks? This session will consider the geopolitical risks associated with the transformation of the global energy system from one based on fossil fuels to one dominated by low- carbon sources of energy that meets the goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement. A failure to manage these risks will increase the costs and slow the pace of change making it difficult to achieve our climate ambitions. The session will be introduced by a presentation from Professor Mike Bradshaw (SIB).

Professor Michael Bradshaw Professor of Global Energy

Professor Bradshaw’s academic background is in human geography. He completed his undergraduate training at the University of Birmingham (BSc) and he has an MA from the University of Calgary (Alberta) and he gained his PhD at the University of British Columbia. He works at the interface between economic and political geography, business and management and international relations. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (and past Vice President) and a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. Professor Bradshaw is the academic lead for the University’s Global Research Priority on Energy. His research on the geopolitical economy of global energy has examined the role of foreign investment in Russia’s oil and gas industry (with a focus on Sakhalin); global energy dilemmas and the interrelationship between energy security climate change and economic globalization; and the challenges to the UK’s gas security.

Panel Q&A 2pm – 3.15pm

The role of finance and financial reporting in the transition Room 1.05

Finance is often seen as a leader in the shift towards sustainability and an engine for sustainable growth. In recent years, there has been a surge in new regulations with the aim to create more transparency in financial markets around sustainability-related risks and impacts. However, this progress faces some significant challenges including political resistance to the ESG agenda ahead of key elections in Europe and the UK, concerns over greenwashing, scaling back of EU’s ambition on transition plan regulation and the legal wars fought over the SEC’s climate disclosure rules. These developments raise significant questions about the role of finance and financial reporting in the transition: Are financial institutions in a position to drive the transition and if so, how? Does increased reporting of sustainability risks and impacts accelerate the transition or slow it down? How do investors and lenders confront the trade-offs between long-term sustainability goals and short-term returns and, in this context, how do they manage the ongoing political and economic uncertainty about the transition?

Dr Katharina Dittrich Associate Professor Organisation and Work Group

Katharina Dittrich is Associate Professor of Organisation Studies in the Organisation and Human Resource Management (OHRM) Group at Warwick Business School. She received her PhD in Organisation Theory from the University of Zurich, Switzerland and has been a visiting research fellow at the Said Business School in Oxford, UK, and the University of California at Irvine, USA. Her research interests include climate change, organisational change, organisational routines/ routine dynamics and strategy. In March 2020 Katharina was awarded the four-year Future Leaders Fellowship from the UK Research and Innovation council. Her project is entitled “Financially redesigning the Anthropocene: Investigating tools, data, and practices for climate risks and targets.” Together with five other researchers, Katharina investigates the various finance-focused programmes that are currently pursued to manage the climate crisis by purposefully diverting and directing capital allocation towards more sustainable economies and societies.

Panel Q&A 11.45am – 1pm

Measuring and managing social impact goals Room 1.05

Increasingly, organisations from all sectors are seeking to develop and implement social impact goals which positively impact on their stakeholders. Yet, while the momentum grows, standards of social impact remain less developed than those for environmental sustainability goals – making navigating social impact topics challenging. What counts as social impact? How do we measure this in a rigorous way to inform decision making and prove to stakeholders the benefits? In this panel, we will hear from a range of experts who are actively addressing these questions in their work and research.

Dr Haley Beer Associate Professor of Operations Management

Dr Haley Beer holds a PhD in Management from the University of Warwick for her dissertation on Social Enterprise Performance Measurement and Management. She is the Lead of the Social Impact Evaluation of Coventry City of Culture 2021. Her research focusses on the creation and measurement of social value and social impact: how organisations can have, and demonstrate, a positive influence (physical, emotional, cultural) on all stakeholders - not just make financial profit for shareholders. Dr Beer has volunteered on, and contributed to, several regional, national, and international advisory committees, not-for-profit boards, and social value projects with United Kingdom and Canadian government entities and socially motivated organisations. She has consulted on impact measurement for organisations such as the Crown Estate, OECD, UNDP, and the Department for Communities and Local Government.
