to have written on the cover: ‘Highly explosive.«Handle with care.’” There is dynamite in the New Testament, that many people know nothing about. ‘‘It summons a human being into the presence of the everliving Christ, who alone gives the power w h i c h still makes men loving anji long-suffering and strong.” ~* We are a world at war. What power does the Bible offer us today—we who are defense workers, we who are serv ing in the Armed Forces of our coun try, we who are faeing problems of shortages, higher costs of living, and fatigue? ---- ;— For Those Who Have Topics I. THE POWER OF AUTHORITY (John 20:30, 31; 21:25). God* has a message for the world, and He ’is still speaking authorita tively to all-peoples. As He has prom ised, so will He fulfill His plans. We need to check our lives with the Great Architect, as shown in the blueprint of the Scriptures, that we may have His appointed place in the building whose corner stone is the Lord Jesus Christ Himself (Eph. 2:20-22). II. THE POWER FOR AMBASSADORS (Rom. 1:14-16; 2 Cor. 5:20, 21). Paul never would have been able to do his missionary work with the handi caps of chronic physical weakness, had the power of the living God not been his (Phil: 4:13). Peter would never have dropped his chameleon like ways had he not come in contact with the risen Christ. George Mueller’s faith would not have claimed victories through the years had he not known “the Book and the God of the Book.” “To do God’s work, we must have God’s power. To have God’s power,we must - • / know God’s will. To know God’s will, wemust study God’s Word.” —John R. Mott. III. THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP (Prov. 18:24). As we fellowship with Christ, we discover that He guides in the choice of other friends, that the bond of friendship -between Christians is a closer bond oftentimes than that of blood relationships. Come often to Christ and read of Him in the sacred pages. He, the Living Word, will be to you a Friend that Sticketh closer than a brother. Helps for the Leader 1. service men’s centers have become so bad that Army officials have been forced to take drastic steps to clean them up—not for moral or spiritual reasons, but to try to keep the men physically fit to fight. This is a dark picture, and a difficult one to paint, but these conditions actually exist. IV. YOUTH AT THE WHEEL OF SPIR ITUAL LIFE. The challenge to Christian young people is: “Are you taking the wheel to direct the spiritual life of our coun try, as youth is doing in every other field?” If there is any real danger of -a “shortage,” it is not in guns, planes, tanks, or food, but in spiritual lead ership. Yet no one can lead others, spiritually, until he himself has been led to Calvary’s cross, there to obtain forgiveness for sin, and to receive the empowering of the Spirit of God to live victoriously (1 Pet. 1:23; 2:24; Acts 1:8). Are we, as Christian young people, having been born again—are we accepting the challenge to lead others? If we fail to do it, we shall see when this war is over, whether we win, lose, or draw, the greatest spirit ual and moral collapse this country ever has known. The blame will lie squarely at the door of the Christians who failed the Lord in this day of confusion, when the world is looking to the church for leadership and find ing so little. The only answer is the m a k i n g known of the Lord Jesus Christ, our Lord and Master, to a world and generation which has lost the way. AUGUST 15, 1943 THE POWER OF THE BOOK
