The universe entire was His, And that He might have giv’n, But blood alone can sin atohe,'- And make me fit for heaven. And so God gave. His blessed Son, . To die on Calvary; No other gift cpuld cleanse my soul; Christ is the gift for me. . —Ethel M. Clarkson. 23. Spiritual Freshness “Bless the Lord, O my soul,. . . Who saitisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s” (Psa. 103:2, 5). It is so easy to get stale arid to feel prematurely old. The rod laid up be fore the Lord bore buds and blossoms as well as fruit. Constant fellowship with Christ and the renewing of His life with every breath will make it true of us as well as Him, “In the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth.—A. B. Simpson. 24. The Race and the Goal . “Let us lay aside every Weight . . . and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith” (Heb. 12:1, 2). Paul was fond of using the athletic games and contests of his time as illustrative of gospel truth. When a man runs a race he keeps his eye on the goal. There is no lookiiig aside at the grandstand. He pays no attention to the cheering crowd; for if he Wins not the race, what is the cheering worth? He looks not to see if folks are admiring his efforts. Of what worth is admiration if he is not the victor? Jesus is the Goal, holding out His arms to encourage arid cheer the Christian on.— Upward. 25. Precious in His Sight “This thing is from me” (1 Ki. 12:24). “He that toucheth you, toucheth the apple of his eye” (Zech. 2:8). * My child, I have a message for you today; let me whisper it in your ear, that it may gild with glory any storm clouds which may arise, and smooth the rough places upon which you may have to tread. . . . I would have you learn when temptations assail you, and the “enemy shall come in like a flood,” that this thing is from Me, that your weakness needs My might, and your safety lies in letting Me fight for you.—Laura Barter Show. 26. God's Will Satisfies “For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with good ness” (Psa. 107:9). Whatever the appearances, what ever even the actual sufferings of the present for the child of God who de-

termined by our consent. As S. D. Gor don says, “The Spirit only does as mueh as we let Hlm do. If we let Him work in us all He wants to, He Works for us all we need.”—Morris E. Rosene. 19. , Joy in Believing “These things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given them thy word” (John 17:13, 14). When my Lord Christ became a liv ing and unutterably necessary reality to me, I remember that one of my first sensations of profound relief was, “He absolutely trusted the Bible, and though there are in it things inexplic able and intricate that have puzzled me so much, I am going, not in a blind sense, but reverently, to trust the Book because of Him.” —Handley G. C. Moule. 20. A Heart of Humility “In honor preferring one another” (Rom. 12:10). The humble man feels no jealousy or envy. He can praise God when oth ers are preferred and blessed before him. He can bear to hear others praised and himself forgotten, because in God’s presence he has learned to say with Paul, “I am nothing.” He has re ceived the Spirit of Jesus, who pleased not Himself, and sought not His own honor. His humility does not consist merely in thoughts or words of self depreciation, but in a “heart of humil ity,” encompassed by compassion and kindness, meekness and long-suffer ing—the sweet and lowly gentleness of the Lamb of God.—Andrew Murray. 21. Because Christ Is Coming “And every one that hath this hope set on him purifieth himself, even as he is pure” (1 John 3:3, R. V.). The truth of “the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ” purifies and transforms the life as nothing else does. The effect on the life is revolutionary. There is scarcely a practical duty in daily life, to which an exhortation may not b^ found somewhere in Scripture reinforced by association with' the coming advent of Jesus. It is a safeguard against error,, for those who cherish the hope of our Lord’s return verify what they hear with the Word, and reject what does not conform to its teaching. —F. W. Farr. 22. The Gift for Me “Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins” (1 John 4:10). He might have giv’n the starry realms As purchase price for me, But starry hosts could never take My guilt, and make me free.
