Welcome

Hi, I’m Michelle of @crazycatladyldn , and I’m here to welcome you to Issue 4 of the Carnaby Magazine. I built my Instagram around sharing photos of the prettiest places in London, and naturally Carnaby is one of my favourites. Here are my top five Insta-worthy spots, all of which will be sure to set your like count sky-high. As a music and fashion lover, Carnaby Street was at the top of my list of places to visit long before I moved to London. Made famous in the swinging 60s, Carnaby remains iconic and influential, and the pedestrianised streets are home to unique and independent fashion and lifestyle stores that boast some seriously Instagrammable moments. Get snap-happy in Daniel Wellington’s apartment-style store or at one of my personal favourites, Monki (don’t miss their iconic rainbow staircase), or head to the cobbled Newburgh Quarter, where Lazy Oaf showcases cool collabs in the basement. With the cooler weather approaching, Carnaby has you covered with the best Winter Warmers , from a colourful cuppa at Farm Girl Café (they do those cute rose lattes) to something a little stronger at underground bar Cahoots in Kingly Court, where you can enjoy cocktails and rations in a London wartime setting.

Speaking of food, Carnaby is a one-stop hub for foodies. Lust after Carnaby’s sharing plates at The Big Feast , devour an exclusive interview with Hamish Brown, head chef of Carnaby newbie INKO NITO , and check out 24 hours in Carnaby to discover the best places to eat, drink and shop as revealed by the locals.

And there you have it: food, fashion, music and much more. I hope you enjoy this issue as much as I have.

Now you’ve seen my fave Insta-spots of Carnaby, it’s time to see yours. Share your moments with @ CarnabyLondon .

Jerrod Blandino BORN THIS WAY Interview Tom Bottomley

After 20 years of being one of the leading beauty brands in the industry, Too Faced co-founder Jerrod Blandino talks us through his success, inspiration and what the future holds.

6

So, beauty! Talk us through your journey. I started out working behind the beauty counter and loved mixing and matching products and colours to make the perfect shades for my clients. It’s a great feeling instilling self-esteem and confidence into women. Happy 20th birthday, Too Faced. What are you doing to celebrate? We are celebrating with an amazing collection called Cheers to 20 Years – throwbacks from 1998 reimagined with a 2018 twist, including an eye palette, glitter lips and limited-edition Better Than Sex mascara. We also conducted the biggest model search in the history of Too Faced to make a dream come true for one lucky girl, who became the face of the entire collection.

Where does your product inspiration come from? I get inspiration from everything around me; even the smallest detail could ignite a new idea for a product or even an entire collection. For example, the chocolate idea was born from a chocolate facial I had on a trip to Hawaii. I learned about all the skin-loving benefits that came from cocoa powder and I knew I had to figure out a way to infuse that into our products. What are the most important things that great make-up can achieve? The most important thing make-up can achieve is to instil self-esteem into somebody. How you look in the mirror impacts how you feel about yourself. If someone looks in the mirror and has achieved the best version of themselves then I’ve done my job.

Why did you choose Carnaby to open your first ever Too Faced store? London is home to our largest demographic, and I knew Carnaby was the perfect place for my first ever store because historically it has been a place for beauty, fashion, fun and rebellious glamour. What’s special about the Carnaby store and why is it a must-visit for beauty fans? I wanted it to feel like a Too Faced amusement park, with different experiences for each product and Instagrammable moments everywhere you turn. It’s fun and fabulous and our customers get to experience our products in 3D. What are your favourite Too Faced products right now? Better Than Sex was the most difficult product I’ve ever created and the one I’m most proud of. Hangover Primer loves your skin even when you don’t, and Born This Way Foundation is a foundation we formulated that looks like your skin (but better) without sacrificing coverage.

American Classics

The Newburgh Quarter boasts some of the finest heritage and quality design-led brands from both Britain and America, and there’s a real buzz surrounding their latest collections. Look out: Barbour Heritage has launched a new sub-brand, Barbour Beacon. The name comes from the Beacon lighthouse in South Shields, which has been synonymous with Barbour since 1894, and is a contemporary take on the company’s heritage with a youthful, sharp, branded look. Key pieces include hiking fleeces, logoed tees and lightweight backpacks. Over at Pankhurst London , celebrate the best of British style, craft and taste with their new collaboration with single malt whisky The Balvenie. Relax in one of the shop’s Bentley bespoke barber’s chairs, chill out, take a sip and enjoy a truly crafted grooming moment. There’s also an amazing selection of new products to buy to remember your experience.

Head to Cubitts for their new Grafton collection. The brother to their Flaxman style, Grafton has a rounded, angular lens making it versatile in shape, and while you’re there, be sure to book in for an in-house eye test. Shop the premium Laurel Wreath by Fred Perry collection. Each piece celebrates enduring styles borrowing details from the brand’s sportswear and modernist heritage. All new pieces are made in a monochromatic palette and have been designed with a directional approach. Key details include reversed seams, raw-edged patches and contrast stitching. A UK exclusive welcomed to the Newburgh Quarter from across the pond, the brand-new dedicated Red Wing Women’s store is just a stone’s throw from the men’s shop. The new collection features three ranges, Core, Legacy and Modern. The Core range presents styles from the men’s collection such as the iconic Moc Toe, Iron Ranger and Engineer boots – redesigned with the female foot in mind.

To go with your Red Wings, head to the freshly refurbished Levi’s Vintage Clothing store, carrying premium new men’s and women’s styles inspired by the 1978 Jamaican film ‘Rockers’. The result is a colourful blend of jeans, 1960s-style knits, Sta-Prest trousers and denim skirts. Cord is king in this new line, and there’s a Trucker jacket that features a patchwork of 11 different colours. Heritage American outdoor brand Filson has some cracking new outerwear this season at its only UK store. The Quilted Pack Jacket is a versatile, lightweight and insulated jacket that can be worn alone in cool weather or zipped in to other Filson jackets when the cold really bites. The rain-repellent Tin Field Coat is another winter winner.

Cubitts

Barbour Beacon

Nixon’s brand new Time Tracker watch is a quantum leap forward in angled aesthetics. Some call it 'future retro', but we prefer 'déjà new'. It comes with a dial that’s undeniably Nixon with a classy black stainless-steel strap. The Water-Repellent Collection of backpacks and wallets is also a must for urban commuters. For further timepieces of distinction, Detroit’s finest, Shinola , has the stand-out new Canfield Sport – a refined and quintessential classic. Plus, their Runwell backpack handily includes a padded compartment for your laptop and a pocket for your phone. For women, the stunning new leather Birdy Hobo bag is a sleek and modern choice and can also be personalised for free in store. It’s original touches like that that make shopping in the Newburgh Quarter so special.

Destination Denim

True Religion

Carnaby is home to some of the most groundbreaking and unique denim brands in the world, with flagship stores galore stacked with the very best of the new season’s collections. Here’s your go-to guide.

Levi’s

Replay

With a cracking store on Carnaby Street, Levi’s has held the crown for denim royalty since 1873. This season, the brand is jumping head first into the sneaker and streetwear age, creating styles that mix today’s trends (like splashy graphics, high-rise jeans and logo mania) with flashbacks to the coolest looks from the 80s and 90s. And while skinny fits aren’t going anywhere anytime soon, the world of denim has opened up into a new wide array of silhouettes, from faded 90s 501® jeans à la Kurt Cobain, the high-waisted jeans of Friends Season One, to the retro sportswear of Diddy when he was still Daddy (first name Puff). And, of course, plenty of cropped and tapered jeans to show off those kicks. Over on Newburgh Street, Levi’s Vintage Clothing Shop takes inspiration this season from the 1978 Jamaican film ‘Rockers’, and the colourful dance hall and reggae styles of that era. There are Sta-Prest trousers, denim skirts and even a pair of 70s-style flares. Corduroy features heavily too, with a 14-wale cord jean and Trucker jacket that features a patchwork of 11 different colours.

True Religion is focusing on fit, fabric and texture for both men and women. There are vintage-inspired heritage wash bottoms and edgy sportif tops, and for women comes The Perfect Jean, with a back yoke dart to shape and slim. Replay has its new Hyperflex + jeans, which have three-dimensional flexibility in the threads, ensuring a perfect fit that holds its shape. Black denim is big news. For men, there’s the new Ambass slim-fit biker jean, and for women the fresh Luz skinny fit. Head to Diesel for ripped and repaired treatments with a nod to iconic archive items. Babhila High is the new, higher-rise version of the skinny Babhila fit for women. And there are plenty of oversized silhouettes joining the JoggJeans and biker pants. Pepe Jeans London has Raw and Selvedge denim specials in hoodies, skirts, jackets and jeans. The Ragged Priest is perhaps the edgiest kid on the block, with ripped and slogan-adorned denim in a variety of fits. (Their autumn/winter collection is based around sports utility, hiking and climbing, with bold slogans).

Brown has steered away from traditional techniques and Japanese ingredients and introduced new products that really suit this kind of cooking, such as beef cheeks with spicy Korean miso, pickled daikon and butter lettuce. Another firm favourite is the cobia collar, which is taken from the neck of a black compachi fish. 'It’s usually a by-product, but it’s a very delicious piece and we cook it on the robata grill with brown butter ponzu,' explains Brown. 'It’s a very firm and slightly oily white fish, similar to tuna, and it’s really delicious.' Brown and his other cooks used to have it for breakfast before they started work but then realised it tasted too good to be used for that. Brown says that Japanese restaurants in London tend to be either top-end, with premium products, or more casual and takeaway-focused. 'Our mission was to find a spot in the middle where we can become more accessible to everyday dining.'

55 Broadwick Street comes a new take on traditional Japanese food, with a menu by Hamish Brown created to tantalise your taste buds. INKO NITO is an open- plan venue with communal tables, good music and a chilled-out atmosphere, with the robata grill taking centre stage. It’s the kind of place where you can while away an evening with friends over food and cocktails or nip in for a quick bite at lunchtime and remain incognito. Brown, who originates from New Zealand, grew up around cooking he describes as ‘the godfather of fusion cooking'. He says: 'We needed somewhere big enough to have a robata grill (a Japanese barbecue often found in pubs in Japan), in the middle of the restaurant. This location was perfect, and the layout lends itself to the whole food-sharing concept. We wanted to create something new and different with a street market feel, and food with action-packed, big and bold flavours.' (his dad being a chef) and worked alongside Peter Gordon, whom

Baby gem salad with caramelised onion wafu dressing and nori

Serves 4 Time to cook 15-20 minutes

Ingredients: 1 sheet of nori 8 heads of baby gem lettuce 2 chopped spring onions 2 tbsp roasted sesame seeds

For dressing: 500g of white onion 200ml of GF soya sauce 20g of carrots ½ nashi pear 100ml of grapeseed oil 30ml of sesame oil

Baby gem salad with caramelised onion wafu dressing and nori

Method: Cut the white onion into fine dice, then caramelise the onion in a heavy-based saucepan until rich in colour, being very careful not to burn it. Then set to one side. Remove the core from the nashi pear and grate using a microplane grater. Do the same with the carrot and mix both with the onions off the heat. Add the remaining ingredients and mix well. Season with a little salt if required, though this will depend on the sweetness from the nashi pear and the carrot.

To assemble: Cut the baby gem into quarters and lay on a tray, then brush with some vegetable oil and grill over a very hot charcoal BBQ (robata grill), and char on both sides. Remove from the grill and chill before serving. Place on the serving plate with the cut surface facing up, and spoon the wafu sauce over, ensuring it gets between the layers. Cut the nashi pear into fine slices and sprinkle over the top with the sesame seeds and the finely chopped spring onions.

And, finally, what’s more fitting to share than home- cooked Bengali cuisine? The classic and authentic dishes at Darjeeling Express are ready to be passed around the table. If you have to pick just a few, we recommend the Tangra chilli garlic prawns, beetroot raita, bihari phulki and channa chaat.

For a wellness boost, try Farm Girl Café ’s unique latte infusions – we recommend the hibiscus latte, organic red matcha with coconut milk, and the Liquid Gold latte with turmeric, cinnamon, astralagus and honey. Your Instagram will thank you for this pretty latte art. Head to Whyte & Brown for their version of a traditional spiced mulled wine while looking at Kingly Court’s twinkling lights. For something more refreshing, The Bramble gin cocktail with rich crème de mûre is a winner. Looking for a late-night hangout? Venture downstairs at the impossibly cool Soho Grind for one of their infamous espresso martinis. Pegged as the best of its kind in London, the guys at Soho Grind make theirs using their own signature blend of coffee mixed with Finlandia vodka, finely strained and served in a coupette glass. For those looking for dazzling cocktails with retro entertainment to match, try Cahoots , the 1940s underground bar hidden beneath Kingly Court. Our favourites are the Eaton Milk, made with 10-year Glenmorangie scotch whisky, and the Louis Armstrong, served with theatrical steaming dry ice.

Following a jam-packed Soho Music Month in June 2018, we caught up with Alex Tracey for the 411 on who’s hot in indie-pop and Rock the Belles DJ Emily Rawson to discover which new artists should be on our radar. Alex Tracey What was your highlight of Soho Music Month? We had an awesome time at the Newburgh Quarter Sessions, filled with sunshine, lovely people and music – what more could you want? Who’s top of your most recent playlist on Spotify? At the moment I’m listening to a lot of Motown. Martha Reeves and The Vandellas, Elton John, The Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye and DeBarge. Anyone we should look out for this season? Riscas is an awesome band. They’ve got an EP coming out soon, which I’m really excited for, and you should be too. Which indie bands should we have on our radar? Peace Frog, Sarpa Salpa and Saltwater Sun. All three put on such a great show. It was a great free event celebrating the best music the area has to offer. The Rock The Belles takeover for the Newburgh Quarter Sessions was awesome. I’ve been waiting for this album for three years; they always come up with the perfect soundtrack that you can listen to at anytime of the year. What’s the song you can’t get enough of? Probably something from the 90s, possibly from Biggie’s ‘Life After Death’, which is one of my top five albums of all time. Emily Rawson What made Soho Music Month so special?

Did you know about Carnaby’s charities…?

Darjeeling Express founded the Second Daughters charity, a cause close to owner Asma Khan’s heart. Asma sends celebration packages and education support for the birth of a second daughter, which is seen as less desirable than a son in India. Dishoom is a proud supporter of Magic Breakfast, helping 31,000 children in the UK every morning to start their school day with a healthy ‘magic’ breakfast. Vegan and cruelty-free make-up brand Too Faced donated $250,000 to animal charities: animal rescue organisation RedRover, international ocean conservationists Oceana and Jameson Animal Rescue Ranch.

Since launching Triyoga in Action in 2015, triyoga has raised over £16,000 for Refugees START and over £15,000 for Magic Breakfast. It also founded the Teddy Foundation, helping kids everywhere enjoy the amazing benefits of yoga. Dirty Bones ’ charity partner Youth Music invests in life-changing music projects for young people, and to support the cause, 10p from the sale of every Chicken & Waffles dish is donated. As if you needed another excuse to eat Chicken & Waffles.
