that as a fact. In the same way, the deep things of God are beyond what the mind of man can grasp— well, doesn’t that seem reasonable if God is God? Would not a humble attitude in the face of the Majesty of God be more becoming than the proud spirit of presumption? Admit that many things in the Scriptures are hard to understand— would that not rather add to the dignity of the believer? After all, w,e have to accept God in faith, and strange as it may seem, that faith, as becomes the trust of a little child in its father, will save us. Jesus said,- “ Search the Scriptures, for in them ye think ye have eternal life.” Acceptance of the Bible as the absolute authority,— as the perfect Word of God— does not stifle intellect or do away with study. But it is only as the Scriptures are approached in a spirit of faith, of acceptance, of be lief, that the profound things con tained in them will be revealed, and the way of life be knowii.' Approach the Bible in any other way, and its mysteries become locked while the critic from the lofty perch of his own conceit misses all that is good— and God Himself! *

tion? The moment mutilation of the Scriptures is admitted there are no limits to which the destructive process cannot go, and who then will dare to say: “ This, or that, i am sure, is the will and plan of God,” but that some one else, equally learned, will rise and say-1—“ No, my idea is the correct one” ? Again we are faced with an absurdity. Incomprehensible But Not Incredible Finally, is the Bible really in need of treatment? What seems to be the matter with it? What pathological condition within its pages calls for the knife? To say that there are not many things in the Bible which the mind of man cannot grasp, things too pro found for the wisest man to under stand, would not be true. But is that sufficient, reason for assuming that error exists? Does the fact that sci entists can not understand the nature of Jife do away with life? Then were we all dead men. The most wonderful phenomenon in the world, the repro duction of the species,— a single cell with power to grow into a perfect re production of the parent organisms, together* with characteristics of the parents1—is still beyond the knowledge of man, and yet all life centers around

Medical science is progressive. We know infinitely more today than we did a century ago about disease and treatment, but we are still ever so far away from the ultimate knowledge by which all disease will be conquered. -Nevertheless, medical science is con tinually at work, making progress, advancing here and there, and in some measure benefltting the human race. However, when the Bible is ap proached we are dealing with God. Man, because of sin, not being willing to accept the plan of God as revealed in the Bible, begins to delve intp the profoundest Book of the ages, and be cause his limited intelTect, his finite mind, cannot grasp the deep things of God, he is bewildered. What brings salvation to the child through faith becomes the stumblingblock to the learned man, and the approach to the Bible becomes a search for error. But if once the authority of the Bible is questioned, what is done to the Bible by its critics becomes entire ly an individual matter. And once the operation has been begun, what is to stop further mutilation till the whole Book is torn beyond recogni
