PERFECTING THE HUMAN SPIRIT A writer In Public Opinion once wrote: "Many years ago Emerson re marked that ‘men are so prone to mis take the means for the end, that even natural history has its pedants who mistake classification for knowledge.’ . . . That, in our opinion, is precisely what has happened to the sorely trou bled world of today. It has fastened its attention upon the machinery of life, has ignored the one supreme human purpose for which all machin ery exists, and now, in the resulting chaos, is amazed to find that the ma chinery failB to function. Let us still be more specific and say that the su preme purpose in any rational life is the unfolding and perfecting of the human spirit.” The above suggests many questions. 1. What is “ the human spirit” 7 Man as a spirit denotes man in his individuality and intelligence (1 Cor. 2 : 11); 2. What is the “ perfecting” of the human spirit? Man as man means self-consciousness. But the man who knows Christ has God-consciousness, and is “ alive unto God” (Rom. 6:11) to do as He directs. 3. What is the “machinery of life” ? Machinery has to do with the power of production, therefore its life is tp live only to produce material things. 4. What is meant when the “ma chinery fails to function” ? It means the end for which the machinery was made does not produce what was intended. Man’s chief end is to glor ify God, and when he does not “ func tion” he is a failure. 5. Why is the world “ s o r e l y J troubled today” ? The reason why the world is “ sorely troubled” is because they do not know Him who says, “ Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Everyone is restless and troubled, who has not “ come.” — P. E. Marsh.

Subscribers, attention! R e a d tills: “ I am enclosing subscrip tion price for another year. I should feel a great lack with out your excellent magazine. Each issue brings great and re newed reasons for praising you in sending out such stirring messages. On my desk at all times are to be found two not able periodicals, of which The King’s Business is one, and I say in all candor !that outside the Bible no reading lends more valuable aid to the minis ter's efforts and field of labor than these two worthy papers. Indeed they rise to the loftiest heights, while many others are unable to do so, or are content merely to abide in the lower levels.” Tell your minis terial friends.
