Three Vital Questions Answered (Continued from page 260)

A REAL GIFT TO MISSIONS A missionary from South Rhodesia, Africa, writes as follows: "My husband and I find The King's Business such an inspira tion and help in our mission work in this far off corner. I am not sure to whom we are indebted for this publication, but wanted to let you know how grateful we are for it. "We get a number of papers and magazines, but none give us the help in Bible study and Sunday School lessons that we get from The King's Business. Please accept our sincere thanks." We cannot continue sending The King's Business to the many mis sionaries who would like to have it unless you REPLENISH THE FUND ! Wouldn't YOU like to have the Joy of knowing that YOUR GIFT made it possible to give this mis- ionary the magazine which she finds so helpful? Then,

such constituents in the atoms of every other element, but no other differences appear. Although composed in identi cal fashion and of identical factors, one aggregation of con stituents marches down through the ages an atom of hydro gen, While another aggregation of constituents exactly alike, though varying in number, marches alongside through the ages an atom of oxygen. The mysteries of likeness and unllkeness seem to be insoluble. Intelligence seems to put them together and to direct them, and they obey intelligence. Scientists stand mute before the mysteries they have uncovered. Out of constituents, Identical in every way, Intelligence makes atoms, molecules, elements, unlike in every way. The dust at our feet, the gold in the hills, the water of the seas, the brilliant diamond, the hurrying cloud, all, in the last analysis, are made of the same mater ia l-nu clei, protons, electrons, all exactly alike. These con stituents obey some superior law of differentiation for which the scientists can find no scientific explanation. The knowl edge of the scientist stops here. Faith or speculation, one or the other, must here take up the story. Oie scientist expresses the admitted limitations of scien tific knowledge thus: "Matter can neither be created nor destroyed by any means known to science ." One of the greatest of scientists states: "The molecule, as known to science, is incapable of growth or decay, of generation or destruction The Eternity of Matter Scientists canno_t create any of the constituents of an atom, nor destroy them. They tell us that they can explore (explode) an atom, but they cannot build one. They say they can expel one or more electrons from an atom, but they cannot bring into the atom one single electron not already there. When, like a falling star, an electron drops out of its universe, all the King’s horses and all the King’s men cannot put it back in place again. Whether we go back ten thousand years or ten million years, the composition of matter existed then as it exists today and possessed its present identities and its present differences. Since water existed, molecules of water have always been the same as they are today— atoms always the same— the constituents of the atom, always the same. There are no modern fashions in molecules, atoms, nuclei, protons or electrons. The Silence of the Scientists “ But,” we say to the scientists, “ you have not yet answered our question. What is the origin of matter? Where did it come from? Where did we get the ultimate primitives, the constituents of the atom? Are these con stituents the ultimate primitives?” And we get no scientific answer. True science must rest upon ascertained facts, and when true science comes to the end of its facts, it must stop. Back of known facts, the scientists must walk as other men walk. They have no charts which other men do not possess— no knowledge which is not, virtually, common knowledge— no mental machinery which enables them to walk more surely back of the domain of known facts than other men can walk. If the scientists are honest with themselves and with us, they will say to themselves and to us that when they have come to the end of known scientific facts they can no longer walk by sight, but must walk by faith, if they walk at all—
