Cato Square will become a unique centrepiece of cultural and community life for residents of Stonnington. It will be an iconic destination within one of Melbourne’s premier shopping precincts. To ensure easy access to the site and to improve mobility around the entire Chapel Street precinct, Council is currently delivering several road upgrade projects. These include: › Grattan Street upgrade works – over $600,000 › Greville Street upgrades between Izett and Porter Streets – over $1.6 million Council is also investing over $20 million to redevelop the historic Prahran Town Hall in 2017. The Victorian Government and private developers also have a number of important projects currently underway in the area or scheduled for construction across 2017, 2018 and 2019. Cato Square will bring a natural and highly functional space to the heart of the Chapel Street precinct; a space in which Stonnington residents can immerse the senses, and see themselves and life more clearly.
Council recognises the impact on residents and surrounding business with the construction of Cato Square. management system. State-of-the-art digital directional signage and a wide range of targeted measures will ensure that residents and visitors can access parking in the area. Council is consulting with traders and the community while actively pursuing a wide number of measures to minimise the impact of the construction of Cato Square. We will use creative responses to ensure access to a car park while the new underground car park is constructed under Cato Square. Plans are being put in place to deliver a precinct-wide real-time car park
Our vision is for Cato Square to be recognised as a world-class public space that is owned and enjoyed by all, enhancing the commercial sustainability and vibrancy of the Chapel Street precinct. We will achieve this vision by: › transforming the existing car park into an active, vibrant, safe and exciting public open space to linger, interact and connect › giving City of Stonnington residents a place to share and engage with others, inspiring pride of ownership › delighting visitors with a variety of spaces for enriching cultural programs and other experiences › being a model for sustainable development and urban revitalisation › serving as a destination for everyone.
Council has worked closely with Heritage Victoria to secure archaeological remains from the site as plans of the area from the late 19th century show a number of detached houses, cottages and terraces fronting Izett, Cato and Chatham Streets. Cato Square will recognise that the site carries a rich history as an important part of Prahran and the community will be invited to participate in this exploration of the past.
Cato Square builds on Council’s long-standing commitment to the environment and will implement a broad range of holistic environmental and sustainability initiatives. Energy efficiency measures will include energy efficient (LED) lighting, high performance thermal, building fabric and glazing. Solar PV, water and storm water capture and management and urban ecology features will be key outcomes of the project. Cato Square will maintain a clear focus on sustainably sourced materials, recycling and efficient waste management to ensure that the project has the highest possible environmental outcomes.
