Celebrating Fourth of July on the Road
The Peachtree Road Race Celebrates 50 Years
When I was 14 years old, I started my own Fourth of July tradition when I ran the Peachtree Road Race for the first time. Technically, it was the one-mile Anthem Peachtree Junior race, but my eighth grade buddies and I were just excited to be out there, charging down the cordoned-off Atlanta streets in our T-shirts, shorts, and running shoes, with our race numbers pinned proudly to our chests. I’ve hardly missed a Peachtree Road Race since. With the exception of a few of the years I was in law school at Mercer and one summer of studying abroad, I’ve made it a point to show up in Buckhead near Lenox Square Mall every year to run alongside the 60,000 other participants who have made Peachtree the world’s largest 10K. I love seeing all of those people from Atlanta and the rest of Georgia come out in force to show their solidarity on the Fourth and have a bit of fun together. It’s a fantastic display of patriotism, and people never fail to make it festive. I always get a kick out of
is over and I’ve cheered the other runners to the finish line, I like to watch the television coverage of the race. On a humorous note, the Nathan's Famous Hotdog Eating Competition airs on ESPN around noon, too. My family fires up the grill for an old-fashioned cookout to finish off the Fourth, but I’m never really that hungry for our home-grilled dogs after watching those people chow down for that competition.
While I always have a lot of fun at Peachtree, between scouting out the best costumes and watching my fellow racers indulge in the doughnuts, pizza, and beer that bars and restaurants hand out along the race route, it’s also one of the most motivating days of my year. The event includes a Wheelchair Division, so that folks with disabilities from around the world can participate as well, and it’s inspiring to see them start the race which I know from personal experience is challenging enough on two feet. Seeing them defy their limitations and finish the 10K makes me want to push myself harder. Many people who participate in that event are veterans, too, and their
the racers dressed like celebrities or the Statue of Liberty, not to mention the firemen wearing full gear. In fact, there are so many racers in and out of costume that my dad, who used to run the race with me, would always mail in our applications the moment they became available so we’d be sure to get a spot. The race is capped at 60,000 runners, which makes competition for slots intense. This year, I took over that job, and I can’t wait to join my fellow racers in celebrating Peachtree’s 50th anniversary. After the race
perseverance brings home the concepts of strength and independence that the Fourth of July stands for. My sign-up sheet for this year is already in, and I’m excited to hit the road. From all of us here at Kevin Patrick Law, happy Fourth of July!

HIKING WITH YOUR KIDS
‘The 30 Love Laws’
A Look at Derrick T. Clark’s Powerful Book
Watch Their World Expand With Every Step
After the dissolution of his marriage, poet and Kevin Patrick Law client Derrick T. Clark started asking some tough questions about love. Why, he wondered, was the word “love” so problematic? How did some people attain it while others couldn’t? Those troubling thoughts kicked off a 15- year investigation and culminated in the book “The 30 Love Laws,” which hit shelves in 2016. “It was an interesting undertaking for me because when I started out on the
Hiking has many benefits as a family activity, such as mental health improvement, strengthening your relationships, and experiencing new sights and discoveries together. It’s also great exercise, and you get plenty of quality time, fresh air, and sunshine. Here are three guidelines to help you and your kids have fun on your next hike. ENCOURAGE THEIR CURIOSITY One of the best ways to have your children learn about the world is letting them explore it. Being there for your children and encouraging them to ask questions about flowers, bugs, or animals you see on the trail will help them expand their vocabulary and learn how things work. When they learn they can explore independently and ask about the world around them, they’re gaining the confidence to teach themselves. BRING ALONG SOME TOOLS OF DISCOVERY Getting your children to engage in nature while you’re out hiking can be as simple as bringing a magnifying glass along with you. Let your kids look at leaves, rocks, insects, or anything else you might come across on the trail. You can also bring binoculars to help them look at a bird that might be perched a little too high up. Another option is a bug holder to let your kids catch smaller insects, such as grasshoppers or pill bugs, and give them a close-up look. KEEP SAFETY IN MIND While you’re out on the trail, it's essential to make sure that both you and your family are safe. Wear breathable, noncotton material and sturdy shoes that don’t expose your toes. It’s important to dress according to the weather. For example, if the day is sunny, wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays and apply plenty of sunscreen on any exposed skin. Bring your kids’ favorite snacks and water bottles for everyone to stay hydrated. It’s crucial that you also bring a fully stocked first-aid kit in case someone is injured on the hike. Starting with one of your local hiking trails can be a rewarding way to spend the day with your kids. You can watch their excitement as they expand their world with new discoveries.
book, I didn’t know it was going to become a book,” Derrick said. “After a divorce, I started to examine that word, ‘love,’ and I’m like, ‘Well, it can’t be this hard for people who say they love each other to coexist.’” To find answers, Derrick started talking to people, asking happily married couples, therapists, divorcees, and faith leaders about their personal definitions of love. Each person had a different answer, and some even told him the word was impossible to define. Derrick saw the discrepancy as a major obstacle to successful long-term relationships. “If someone tells you to go to the car, but you don’t have any concept of what a car is, then you’re just out in the parking lot looking around,” he said, adding that the quest for love works the same way. In his book, Derrick breaks love down into three parts: the emotional element, the spiritual element, and the friendship element. Those elements provide context for the 30 love laws that give the book its name. Of those laws, the first 10 are geared toward the individual, the next 10 explain how to build a love connection with someone else, and the final 10 focus on maintaining that relationship. Three years after publishing “The 30 Love Laws,” Derrick is happily married to the love of his life and offers relationship counseling to other couples. He credits the process of writing the book with saving him from more heartbreak and said that although he wrote it for himself, he’s proud of its positive impact on others. When he has a break from book tours and speaking engagements on “The 30 Love Laws,” Derrick plans to start work on a second book.

July may just be the most patriotic month, and there are few professions more in line with patriotism than practicing law. Laws embody the ideals our country was founded on, and by challenging and upholding them, lawyers help keep them up to date. To celebrate that mission this month, we’ve put together a short list of some of the most famous lawyers born on the Fourth of July.
CALVIN COOLIDGE Apart from being the 30th president of the United States, Calvin Coolidge was also a top-notch country lawyer. Instead of attending law school, Coolidge apprenticed with the Massachusetts law firm Hammond and Field before going on to open his own law office practicing commercial law in 1898. Presidents John Quincy Adams and Gerald Ford were also former lawyers born in July, though they weren’t lucky enough to claim the fourth as a birthday.

The Guardian Who Would Not Leave His Watch Odin Lives up to His Legendary Name Amid the devastation of the wildfires that tore through California in the fall of 2017, a few heroic tales rose up to give people hope. One such tale was of Odin, a loyal Great Pyrenees guard dog. Along with his sister, Tessa, and eight rescue goats, Odin is part of the Hendel family. It was mid-October when the Hendels were awoken by the smell of smoke, a fierce orange sky, and sounds of destruction — urgent warnings from Mother Nature. Gathering everyone as quickly as they could, the Hendels got their human family members and Tessa in the car, but Odin, seated proudly next to the eight goats, refused to get in. Try as they might, the Hendels could not get him to come with them, and there wasn’t enough room in the car for the eight goats. With the firestorm quickly approaching and the risk of losing even more family members increasing with each passing minute, the Hendels made the heart-wrenching decision to leave Odin and the goats behind. The family made it to safety with Tessa in tow, relieved to be together but heartbroken that Odin and the goats weren’t with them. After several agonizing days, it was finally safe enough for them to return home and survey the destruction.
What did the Hendels find? Ashes, rubble, their barn and home burned to the ground — and Odin. There he was, still guarding his eight goats and some small deer that had sought shelter with the brave canine. Weakened, burned, and limping, but nevertheless steadfast, Odin had never left his goats, even as the fire raged around them. Odin wagged his tail as he saw his family, happy to see they were also safe. The Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue and the Goatlandia Animal Sanctuary provided temporary shelter for the goats and pups while the Hendels rebuilt their barn. Odin received all the care he needed, along with a lot of love and treats. Today, Odin and his goats are back with their family, rebuilding their lives after this devastating wildfire. But the Hendels, and anyone who’s heard the story, won’t soon forget the bravery of Odin, the amazing pup.
