HAWKESBURY | Supporters of the Hawkesbury Central Food ought to speak out in order to ensure the organization can help the needy, says former president Shirley Clermont. “There has to be a clean-up there. We need a new manager and new board members,” states Clermont, who says she stepped down because she could no lon- ger tolerate the new stricter eligibility re- strictions imposed on clients. “I am for the people. This is a food bank, not a business,” comments Clermont. “This new protocol is not right. It is ridiculous. People who are needy, people who are on welfare, need that food.” She was referring to a new proposed re- striction that would limit to five the num- ber of times per year a client could seek assistance at the Main Street service. Citing an “alarming” rise in requests for help, food bank manager René Baril has maintained the new restriction is necessary to ensure the survival of the organization. The new proposed policy would affect a small mi- nority because most clients visit four or five times per year, says Baril. But Clermont con- tends that Baril has lost sight of the food bank’s mission. “He is not supposed to ask people about how they spend their money. The food bank is there to give out food to
