GATOR COUNTRY Gainesville is called “Gator Country” for a reason, and it’s not only because it’s home to the University of Florida Gators athletic teams or the official name of the city’s newspaper. The state of Florida is riddled with American alligators, and Gainesville is no exception. While these crocodilians can be a sight to see, it’s wise to exercise caution and avoid close contact with any you may come across. You’re likely to see a gauntlet of gators near bodies of water including marshes, lakes and ponds, as well as on golf courses and while at nature preserves.

CENTURY TOWER CARILLON Standing 157 feet tall at the heart of campus, Century Tower is one of the most iconic fixtures on the University of Florida campus. That’s because Century Tower houses a cast-bell carillon. According to the University of Florida School of Music’s Carillon Studio, there are fewer than 200 carillons in all of North America, and only four in the state of Florida. By definition, a carillon must have at least 23 fixed, finely tuned bells. The Century Tower Carillon has 61 bells, encompassing a range of five octaves. It is among the largest university carillons in North America.
