February 28— “Do all things without murmurings" (Phil. 2:14). We heard of one who prayed thus: “Lord, help me to do what I don’t want to do, and to do it pleasantly.” We often feel obliged to do things when w'e would rather be doing other things. Often our sense of duty drives us to a task into which it is hard to -put our heart. Let us ask God to keep us at the necessary task and to help us to perform it pleas antly.— Watchman-Examiner. Match 1-^“Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance” (Eph. 6:18). The very fact that prayer is so impor tant a factor in our spiritual conflict makes it certain that the great adversary will try to hinder and defeat this weapon of at tack. Therefore, we need all persever ance as well as all sincerity and devout ness. It is not enough to find access to God in prayer and be conscious of the an swering witness of the Holy Ghost. We must often follow this up with continued intercession. Frequently it is only through the spiritual force of persistent prayer that the answer comes. To stop halfway is very much like winning a battle and then failing to pursue the foe until the rout is complete. When Elisha on his dying bed was giving to the king a great object lesson on prayer, he first taught him to pull the bow-string and shoot the arrow with the impetus of his powerful arm. But that was only the beginning of the victory. He must next take the arrows and smite upon the ground; and when he failed to follow this up to a finish, but smote only thrice and stayed, the prophet was grieved and angry because he himself had cut short the complete blessing which God had already intended to give him. Beloved, let us not leave out the last half hour, but pray “with all perseverance.” — A. B. Simpson. ' —o— March 2— f‘For in him dwelleth all the fulness o f the Godhead bodily” (Col. 2:9). As a majestic mountain rises above the foothills, so Jesus Christ rises above all other men. There was none like Him be fore His coming; there has been none like Him since; there never will be. Jesus was God and man—as divine as God and as human as you and I. What does Christ offer you? He offers you the forgiveness of your sin; fellowship with Himself; . . . a victorious life; and, finally, the crown of eternal life. All that He offers, you need; you need it desperately. —The Changeless Christ. Jesus, of Thee shall be my song, To Thee my heart and soul belong; All that I am or have is Thine; And Thou, blest Saviour, Thou art mine. — H. Collins. —o— March 3— “In thy favour our horn shall be exalted” (Psa. 89:17). At all times, under all circumstances, God’s grace is sufficient for us . . . The Christian life is a life of assured victory. The “horn” in the Old Testament is the symbol of conquest, of victory. Wherever the word occurs, it is associated with com plete victory. When it says here, “In thy
favour our horn shall be exalted,” of course it means that in union and com munion with God there is assured victory as well as complete protection. It may be questioned whether we have ever sounded the depth, or rather scaled the height, of St. Paul’s word, where, in Ro mans 8, he speaks of us as “more than con querors.” One of the French versions is, “conquerors, and beyond that.” Yes, but what is the “beyond that” ? It is “super conquerors” ; not merely the bare victory, not merely that which just manages to get home, but that which gives us a perfect and abundant conquest over the enemy. God does not expect us, or desire us, or intend us to creep into heaven on our hands and knees, for has He not spoken of the “abundant entrance into the ever lasting kingdom” ? And this is the thought here, “conquerors, and more than that,” super-conquerors; victory and more than victory assured in the favor of God. — W. H. Griffith Thomas. ■—o— March 4—“Peace I leave with you” (John 14:27). If we are really Christ’s, then back into the very bosom of His Father where Christ is hid, there He will carry us. We, too, shall look out and be as calm and as independent as He is. The needs of men shall touch us just as keenly as they touch Him, but the sneers and strifes of men shall pass us by as they pass by Him and leave no mark on His unruffled life. For us, just as for Him, this will not mean a cold and selfish separation from our breth ren. We shall be infinitely closer to their real life when we separate ourselves from their outside strifes and superficial pride, and know and love them truly by knowing and loving them in God. This is the pow er and progress of true Christianity. It leads us into, it abounds in peace. It is a brave, vigorous peace, full of life, full of interest and work. It is a peace that means thoroughness, that refuses to waste its force and time in little superficial tu mults which come to nothing, while there is so much real work to be done, so much real help to be given, and such a real life to be lived with God. That peace, His peace, may Jesus give to us all. “Grant us Thy peace that, like a deepening river, Swells ever outward to a sea of praise. O Thou, of peace the only Lord and Giver, , Grant us Thy peace, O Saviour, all our days 1” WBS^Phillibs Brooks. March 5— “Jesus answered and said . . . I f a man love me, he will keep my words” (John 14:23). It is not the imperative of an external command that sends us after the lost; it is the impulse of an indwelling Presence. We may be commanded forever to take the gospel to the lost, and it will never move u s ; but when we are fully possessed and controlled by Him whose life it was to seek and to save the lost, we shall go, command or no command. Back of all successful work for the lost is an inward spiritual impulse; and back of the impulse is the Holy Spirit who reproduces Christ in u s; and the brand mark of it all is the cross, the living experience of which must
