Boars Ruining Stinky Cheese M

unster cheese is a soft cheese famous for its strong (some say terrible) smell. The cheese is traditionally made by rubbing it in a brine (salty liquid) which helps grow bacteria. This process prevents mold but also provides the powerful aroma and flavor. The wheels of cheese are washed and brushed daily, and allowed to mature. In the olden days, the cheese was matured in damp cellars. Experts say that the

The longest lasting light bulb in existence is now estimated to be 123 years old. It’s not quite glowing strong, but this hand-blown, carbon-lament, 60-watt bulb emits a continuous dim light. After all these years it has earned a place in The Guinness Book of World Records . It’s known as“The Centennial Bulb”and it has been moved a few times but is now looked after by the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department in California. In 2013, it was reported that the light had gone out, but an electrician diagnosed a faulty power supply, xed the problem, and the light came back on. Believe it or not, you can check on the current status of the light bulb by watching it in real time at the Light Bulb Cam: centennialbulb.org .

best Munster cheese is made from pastures in the Vosges Mountains in eastern France that have been mowed for midsummer hay. Strict rules apply to the making of Munster

dug up about 60% of these pastures on 43 farms. The Munster cheese production is threat- ened because the damage to pasture land means grass cannot grow and is often contaminated by wild boar droppings. The quality of the cow’s milk in the area has

cheese. The ingredients must come from local farms in the area, but local boars have a different idea. Wild boars forage for acorns, under- ground grubs and roots. And they have

suffered so much that the local farmers are asking for hunters to come and help to reduce the wild boar population.

World’s Biggest Bee Rediscovered

The world’s biggest bee disappeared from sight almost 40 years ago. It was thought to be lost forever, as is the case of so many insects becoming extinct in recent years. But in January 2019, an expedition into the forests of Indonesia, discovered a specimen of Wallace’s giant bee. Natural history photographer, Clay Bolt, was part of a team that discovered the bee. Its nest was carved into an active termite mound in a tree on

one of the North Molucca islands. Bolt describes the bee as“breathtaking,”with a length of about one-and-a-half inches, (the size of a thumb) and a wingspan of approximately two-and-a-half inches. It has immense jaws like a stag beetle, which it uses to help build its nest and make it waterproof to keep out termites. The discovery is encouraging for scientists, who thought Wallace’s giant bee to be a lost species.

In the summer and early fall, the air over the oceans heats up and then rises. Then it cools, and the moisture in the air forms storms over the ocean. When bands of these thunderstorms begin to swirl in a circular fashion, the system is called a tropical depression . If the swirling winds reach 40 miles per hour, the system is called a tropical storm . If the winds reach 74 miles per hour, its name is changed to a hurricane . Hurricanes weaken when they move over cooler water or land. Some die out over the Atlantic Ocean before they ever hit land. Read each step. Then, number the pictures in order.

A strange thing about hurricanes is that in the center of the fast moving, dangerous winds is a calm area called the eye . The eye of Hurricane Katrina, which devastated the Gulf Coast in fall of 2005, was 25 miles across.

Hurricanes form where the water of the seas is above 80° F (27° C). The Earth’s seas are the warmest near the equator because of the way the Earth is tilted. The equator is always getting direct sunlight, keeping the waters warm.

Hurricane names are chosen from lists compiled by the World Meteorological Organization. The Atlantic is assigned six lists of names, with one list used each year. Every seventh year, the first list begins again. Each name on the list starts with a different letter. For example, the name of the very first hurricane of the season starts

Would you like to splash around in some water on these hot summer days? Try this activity and tell your mom you are doing a science experiment!

As drops are added, they gradually mound into a dome instead of just flowing off the penny. Each drop raises the surface of the dome, until it gets too big and breaks.

• • • • • •

a penny an eyedropper liquid detergent tap water paper towel a place to work that your parents won’t mind getting wet!

The dome shape is caused by surface tension .

Surface

tension is caused by the grouping of molecules. Under the surface of the water, each water molecule attracts and is attracted to molecules on all sides of it.

Wash your penny. Rinse it and dry it well.

Place the penny on a flat surface that’s okay to get wet.

Fill the eyedropper with water and slowly drop water onto the penny, one drop at a time. Count how many drops you can add.

The surface molecules are attracted to the molecules below and to the sides, but there is nothing above the surface molecules to pull upward. The surface molecules pull together and act like a “skin” on the surface of the water.

Molecules pull together on the surface

Water molecules attracting from all sides

Standards Link: Physical Science: Students know that matter has different states (i.e., solid, liquid, gas) and that each state has distinct physical properties.

What shape does the water take? Repeat three times and find the average number of drops the penny can hold.

Repeat this experiment with cold water and then with hot water. Does the temperature of the water change the number of drops that fit on the penny?

Add a drop of soap to the water. Does this change the number of drops that fit on the penny?

The largest hailstone ever recovered in the United States, a seven-inch (17.8- centimeter) wide chunk of ice almost as large as a soccer ball, was found in Aurora, Nebraska.

Try this same activity with dierent liquids such as cooking oil, rubbing alcohol, liquid detergent, salad dressing, etc. Compare how many drops of each liquid t on the top of a penny. Standards Link: Nature of Science: Students understand the nature of scientific inquiry (using tools, making observations, recording notes).

Tusk Trip

Read the scientists’ notebook to see how to get a mammoth out of the ground. Number the pictures in the correct order.

One day, a man was out hunting in Siberia, when suddenly he tripped! Looking down, he saw that he had tripped over a tusk! A mammoth tusk! Scientists came to study the tusk and found that it was attached to an entire frozen prehistoric mammoth. Trying to dig up the mammoth proved difficult. The frozen ground, or permafrost, was as hard as cement!

Do the math to nd out some extraordinary facts about the woolly mammoth.

Mammoths were the largest land mammals that ever existed. They lived throughout the Northern Hemisphere for about 85,000 + 15,000 = ____________ years.

The word “mammoth” is used to describe something incredibly large—and that is what these animals were. They weighed around 9 - 3 = _______ tons.

From the size of its molars, scientists determined that the frozen mammoth was (5 x 9) + 2= _____ years old when it died.

It took more than a year to thaw the mammoth using 5 + 7= _____ hair dryers.

Standards Link: Math; compute sums using +, -, x and order of operations.

Dick Mol, one of the scientists studying the mammoth discovered that science can be smelly. While helping thaw the frozen mammoth, he noticed that it smelled like the elephant exhibit at the zoo!

The scientists thawed the mammoth very slowly and used a sieve to filter out all ancient insects and plant material that was stuck in the fur.

Mosquitoes can spread dangerous diseases to animals and humans. The Mosquito Abatement Team works to kill mosquitoes before they become a problem. How do they do this? Do they send out mosquito swatter teams? Do they spray poison all over? None of the above. They take a much more scientific and safe approach. Mosquito abatement specialists study the life cycle of a mosquito and then try to kill them before they become flying adults.

Watch out! Summertime is also mosquito time. Millions of mosquitoes are out looking for their favorite food—

The best time to battle the bug is at the larva stage. Mosquito abatement teams often put mosquito-larvae-eating fish in the ponds and puddles where female mosquitoes have laid eggs.

Female mosquitoes lay about 200 eggs on the surface of water. The eggs stick together and make a tiny raft.

Leave your spider friends in peace. We like to eat mosquitoes before they eat you!

After just one warm day, larvae hatch from each egg. They look like tiny, wiggling worms.

Which mosquitoes are males and which are females? It is important to know because only one sex drinks blood. Look closely at the head. Between the eyes are the antennae. They can sense sounds and odors. Male antennae are feathery. The female mosquito has long thread-like antennae. Do you see a tiny, straw-like tube sticking out between the antennae? That is the proboscis, or mouth. The female uses this to drink blood. Male mosquitoes feed on plant juices and flower nectar.

After a larva is grown, it changes shape and becomes a pupa. The pupa breathes air through a tube that it holds above the water’s surface while tumbling around in the water.

It takes only one warm day for a pupa to become an adult, flying mosquito.

For example, if you chose the score of a baseball game (10 - 7), you could write a problem like: The Tigers beat the Dodgers by 3 points. The Tigers’ score was 10. What was the Dodgers’ score? Write your word problem here:
