JUNE 2024
A SLICE OF WISDOM How a Camping Mishap Became a Life Lesson in Preparedness
When I think of Father’s Day, I always remember the time my dad disastrously tried to teach me how to use a knife. All thanks to a rather memorable camping trip with my dad, we share an experience neither of us will ever forget. This story isn’t just a classic “how-not-to” lesson in knife safety but also a vivid memory that shaped how I will always prioritize preparedness in whatever I do. Back when I was just a kid living in the Chicago suburbs, Father’s Day was synonymous with camping trips to Wisconsin or Northern Illinois. On one of these trips, my dad decided it was the perfect time to teach me how to properly carve hiking sticks. Armed with my new pocket knife and his larger folding box knife, we searched for the perfect sticks. My dad, trying to pass on his wisdom, reminded me, “Son, always carve away from yourself so you don’t cut yourself.” It’s sound advice — unless you’re demonstrating it like my dad did that day. While I was focused on my carving, Dad suddenly let out a yelp of pain and a slew of profanities. I saw him clutching his hand, a white handkerchief quickly turning bright red wrapped around his finger. In his attempt to show me the right technique, he had managed to slice right through to his knucklebone. The quiet of the forest was punctuated by some choice words. The moment he removed the handkerchief, blood literally squirted out like a scene from a movie. We rushed to the camp’s ranger booth, but the only ranger present was an older man who moved at the speed of molasses and seemed barely awake. Despite the urgency, we got little help there. With Dad’s hand still bleeding and him growing paler by the minute, we drove an hour and a half to the nearest hospital. That paper atlas in the car Dad always carried? It became a travel essential from that day on. I’ll never forget him doing his best to drive safely with his bloodied hand hanging out the window.
At the small hospital, chaos reigned. They told us that with a gunshot victim, asthma attack patient, and childbirth happening, there was only one singular doctor. It took ages before Dad got stitched up by their triage team. This adventure became a legend in our family, often retold by Dad with a chuckle, “Remember the time I taught you how to use a knife?”
From this experience, I learned early on the importance of being prepared. I’ve carried a knife since I was 6 — a tiny Swiss army knife dad bought me from Ace Hardware. It sits proudly in a wooden box inside another box, which is actually a missile container. And yes, I always have a first-aid kit packed in my gear, complete with tourniquets and glue. Someone once questioned its necessity on a hunt, to which I laughed, “Have I ever told you about my dad and the knife?” Now, as a father myself, I’m passing on these lessons (and a few safety tips) to my kids. We’ve moved on from simple apple slicing to more intricate knife work, always emphasizing safety first. This Father’s Day, I’ll be sharing this story, yet again, a little slice of my history, reminding us all how these family legends, however painful at the time, shape our lives and the precautions we take every day in our personal and professional lives.

Unlock the Mysteries of Fort Knox FROM GOLD BARS TO PRICELESS ARTIFACTS
We all know the country’s gold reserve is securely stored in a vault at Fort Knox. However, have you ever wondered about the exact amount of money housed in the vault or who can access it? A treasure trove of interesting facts lies hidden in the billions bunker of Kentucky, but here are a few tidbits we know. Gold The first pieces of gold arrived at the fort in 1937 and had to be transported by a top- secret caravan. Every gold bar weighs 27.5 pounds, and Fort Knox currently holds about 147.3 million ounces of gold. By today’s standards, that’s almost $300 billion. The
most gold to ever be held at the fort was in 1941 when it contained 649.6 million ounces.
himself in 1943, making him the only U.S. president in history to visit.
Security This building is one of the most secure in the country; no one person knows the whole combination number to access the vault of gold. The information is split up among several different people. The exterior has two separate electric fences and an additional concrete barrier. The government spends about $5 million yearly to protect the site, including other security measures like searchlights. Visitors are rarely allowed inside, but Franklin Roosevelt did get to inspect the gold vault
Other Valuables Fort Knox has also kept other valuable, historic items safe. During WWII, the government kept the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and Declaration of Independence within its walls. In 1978, it housed the cape of the king of Hungary and the Magna Carta, the medieval English charter of rights. The military even stored supplies of morphine sulfate inside during the Cold War due to the fear they might run out of painkillers if foreign sources of opium dissipated.
