Reflections from the Editor
Welcome to the Wine & Charcuterie issue of Global Chic Lifestyle. A somewhat unlikely pairing I am not quite sure how I arrived at this theme. Possibly the warm feeling one gets from drinking wine somehow reminded me of the warmth one feels when seeing a beautiful field of bright yellow sunflowers. Regardless of how this came about I am hoping you will enjoy this issue. Visiting wineries has become a bit of a passion for me, probably more for the ambience than for the wine itself! Although I have been to many tastings at some of the most world-renowned wineries, I am by no means well versed in the world of wine. I am often happy with a house Merlot (especially in Italy) but I have learned which wines are my favorites. Although many of the wineries in the US are relatively new it is the art of wine making that gives most wineries such an old world feeling. You feel an instant kinship when dropping into a winery for a tasting. They produce wine and you are there to enjoy it. Having just returned from a short visit to Door County in Wisconsin I have to admit the wineries added so much to our trip. I picked up my grandson (college freshman) and we had a few days to explore. It was unseasonably warm for the last weekend in October and that made it so special. The leaves were still beautiful, the sun was shining, and the wineries offered a place to sit, taste wine, listen to some live music and simply enjoy the day. Cheese, fruit and bread and we had a picnic. So much more fun than sitting for hours in a restaurant we were able to enjoy the last bit of late autumn. While we look toward the busy Holiday Season I hope you will pick up a small bouquet of sunflowers, a bottle of your favorite wine and spend an hour or so perusing the magazine. Cheers! Terry

Inspired by nature Toni’s paintings reflect a calm, thoughtful and often serene feeling. Gentle lines and soft transitions of color are evident in most of her watercolors. Toni reflects that much of her inspiration has come from traveling to Europe and visiting the countryside, as well as quaint villages and cities. However, as a high school student it was a visit to the Chicago Art Institute that first inspired her love of art. Favorite artists include Georgia O’Keefe, Andrew Wyeth, John Singer Sargent, George Seurat and Claude Monet. Eventually she chose nursing as a career, but it was art that she returned to when she retired.
7
Studying art with a variety of teachers Toni has found working in watercolor allows her to creatively capture the world of nature. She uses only the finest products for her work. High quality watercolor paper with a variety of surface textures and weights and watercolor paints imported from Germany or France are her products of choice. Toni also enjoys working in pen & ink which gives her the ability to create finer details with precision that is not usually found in the free-flowing style of her watercolors. She also works in mixed media allowing for an incredible freedom of expression. It is not all seriousness, however, as will be noted in a few of the quirky titles for her paintings, there is a bit of humor.

A day trip to a flea market in Florida, a beautiful day and an old wine bottle. . . was it a sign or merely a coincidence?
Plans for an upcoming trip to Italy were in the very earliest stages and Kim was unsure as to whether she should pursue going along to help photograph a wedding in Italy. Her friend was trying to finalize details with the bride and groom. Wandering through the market in Florida with her mom and aunt, Kim’s aunt spied a bottle and pointed it out to Kim knowing she would like the colors and design. Kim bought the bottle for $1, packed it up and returned home to Michigan with it. She paid little attention to the tattered label but noticed that it was from Italy.
20
21
The details in place her friend knew the location and passed it along to Kim in hopes that she would decide to accompany her.. The wedding was to be in Certaldo Alto and the vineyard where the couple would be staying was in Certaldo. Kim was still hesitating on making the trip. There was the expense, she had animals to think about and she had never traveled to Europe before. Back home with all the details finalized she looked at that old wine bottle and underneath the name Marcialla it said Certaldo, Italy. If she didn’t believe in signs before, she did now. She bought her plane ticket.
22
Followup: There were four women who traveled on that trip. Starting in Tuscany they stayed at a wonderful agriturismo, went on to Certaldo to photograph the wedding and searched high and low for the vineyard that was named on the label. But all to no avail. They never could find it, and even in the town of Marcialla with it’s 500 residents no one seemed to know, however there was a language barrier. Kim even showed some people the bottle, for you see, she had carefully wrapped and brought the bottle back to the town it came from. Though they never found the vineyard the bottle was like an extra traveler, for its existence certainly dictated a bit of their travel and gave them wonderful memories. They found plenty of vineyards to explore and the bottle served its purpose in helping Kim make her decision to travel to Italy. They went to Nice, the Cote d’ Azur, a small beach town in France, and then to Paris. It was an amazing experience. That last night in Paris Kim wrapped the bottle, returned to the US and it now resides in her home.

The Mailly is under $50. Lallier Rose is also an excellent champagne. The Sancerre and Rose are both from the Loire Valley. Sancerre is $35 and Rose is about $10.00. Huste and Camarac are both Bordeaux and Huste is $25 and Camarac was on sale at$16, but is highly rated (as is the Huste). Pinot Noir is from Burgundy and is $25.

“If I could tell the story in words, I wouldn’t need to lug around a camera” Lewis Hines She loved photography and until recently had never felt the need to pair her words and images. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words, and while that may be true, she felt her images might be more fully enjoyed by giving them a bit of context.
Thus, The Gallery Collection is a complication of images and travel journal writings.

M ANOR IN THE V INEYARD I S pending a few days in Napa Valley was relaxing. She had plenty of time to stop at any winery that intrigued her. She loved visiting vineyards on her European trips but she was also grateful for this beautiful area in the US and was quite content to taste the wine, photograph the scenery, and enjoy this very special part of California. It’s ‘roots’ literally and figuratively probably came from Europe.
50
M ANOR IN THE V INEYARD II T he wine country of northern California was exquisite. She was on her own with just her camera and her music. Time to sip a bit of wine, have a picnic, and wait for the perfect light to photograph the Manor. While these wineries did not have the history that those in Europe did, it was evident that the same pride and commitment was given to their winemaking. Beautiful chateaus, rustic wineries and the row after row of grape vines lined the road. What a beautiful day!
51
52
F RANCE S UNFLOWERS S he had always loved sunflowers and longed to photograph the vast fields of yellow blooms, but her timing was always off. She had found fields of red poppies, bright yellow canola, and lavender in full bloom but she had missed the fields of sunflowers. She had come across a few dreary and withering blooms in the late autumn, but not what she had in mind. As she sat in a café in Provence, she noticed the beautiful arrangement of sunflowers, gourds and grapes and decided to take advantage of the scene that presented itself. This image would have to suffice until she found a perfect field in full bloom.
53
54
W INE B ARRELS T he scent of the winery evoked a series of emotions. A hint of nostalgia as she recalled her first wine tasting where she could taste the layers. By no means did she consider herself a wine snob as a few of her favorites were some of the most inexpensive, however she had been fortunate enough to have visited many wineries in the US and Europe. And it was the ambience that intrigued her as much as the wine. This was a particularly beautiful cave in the south of Spain, and she loved the wine too.
55
V INO E SPANA A photography tour in southern Spain, and she and a fellow photographer were leading it. They had the help of a local tour guide, Enrique, but they were the photo experts. The goal was to travel, enjoy the culture and gain some photo expertise. On this evening they would partake in the preparation of a dinner in which the main dish was paella. They joined the staff in the kitchen
56
to watch them create the amazing meal. The restaurant was unassuming but filled with little vignettes, antique cooking utensils and items that were perfectly arranged for us to photograph. This beautiful array of wine bottles adorned the otherwise rustic atmosphere in the restaurant. She loved how the light was streaming through the window and illuminating the bottles just enough to allow her to bring home this memory of a special evening.
57
S TAIRWAY AT THE V INEYARD I t was just a short day trip from Florence to the beautiful winery in Tuscany. She loved the textured walls, the vines on the stairway and the incredible aged terracotta pot. The taste from the wine still lingered in her mouth and she could hear the chatter of the Italians off in the background. She longed to stay in this moment. However, she knew that in Italy there were many more moments like this to be savored. . .
58
THE C AFE T USCANY S he found a quaint little café in a Tuscan town just a short train ride from Florence (Firenze). Not a tourist town but an unassuming, rather ordinary town. But it was Italy, so the ambience was undeniable. After a few days of museums, markets, sightseeing and photographing in Firenze this was just the kind of afternoon she needed. Traveling during the off season meant there were very few lines and crowds to deal with but there was still an energy to the city that she wanted to escape. She needed time to sit, regroup, and reflect on her travels as this amazing trip was coming to an end.
59
A NTICA D IMORA S he had found this tiny little town on the internet and booked a hotel for herself and her nine year old grandson. She usually did not make reservations, but this was July and she certainly did not want his first memory of Italy to be sleeping in the car. She was apprehensive as she spotted
60
61 the little home-made wooden sign pointing up the hill to San Donato. A narrow and winding road led them to the top of a hill and as they rounded the last curve they were greeted with a few buildings, a winery, a church, their hotel Antica Dimora and an array of women artists working on their paintings as they overlooked a vineyard. Seriously… she couldn’t have planned this. She loved serendipity.
62
V INO ~ I TALIA T he Wine Shoppe was yet another symbol of this lifestyle she loved. The Italians certainly know how to make the best of an ordinary day. The wine, the food, the conversation, each meal seemed like a party. When she was here, she would partake in it all. She promised herself to carry home the commitment to make each day count. Had travel really changed her? It was hard to know. Then she remembered some of her old, narrow-minded views about the world and realized she had changed completely. W INE S HOPPE O ne of her favorite locations in Italy was Cinque Terre. Her first visit years ago was unlike anything she had ever seen. Five tiny and colorful villages nestled into the step hillside that dropped down to the Mediterranean Sea. With each subsequent visit, although there were many more tourists, the mere glimpse of the first village, either from a boat or from the milk train still took her breath away. She was happy she had not become complacent and that each visit felt like her first. She stopped to wander through one of the many unique wine shops that were in the village.
63
64
V ILLA ~ I TALIA T he beautiful villa with its welcoming iron gate was the perfect location for the wedding photographs she would be taking later in the afternoon. The American couple had chosen a romantic location for their private wedding in Tuscany. A gorgeous bride and an incredible Italian villa in the hills of Tuscany. . .the vineyard across the street. . . she loved her job.
65
R ED D OOR & S HUTTERS T he rolling hills of Tuscany with small Italian villages scattered about spoke to her soul. She was relatively sure there was no Italian blood in her Swedish, German and Polish background, but she, along with much of the rest of the world, loved Italy. There was an intensity, yet somewhat laid back attitude about life that she admired. An undeniable zest for living and she wanted to capture that attitude and take it home.
66
F RENCH C HEESE A nother European Market . . . would she ever find these trite and boring? Not a chance. A gathering unlike any other where fashion, food, entertainment become an experience for the senses. Food is taken seriously to a new level. It is sniffed, tasted and talked about before the final purchase. Customers are drawn in by beautiful presentations; a magnificent art. Each booth reminded her of a wonderful impressionist painting with all the elements carefully placed in the composition. A scene created with love and pride.

destination road trip Green Barn Winery
There has always been a romance that surrounds wine and for this particular winery it is even more so. Owners Becky and Mike Wrubel were on a wine tour honeymoon in northern Michigan when they discovered that Becky was allergic to the sulfites contained in most wines.
72
Determined to find wine that was sulfite-free was certainly difficult, so they did what any resourceful entrepreneurs would do, they decided to open their own winery and produce sulfite-free wine. In 2012 they converted the front half of their barn to a modern wine production facility. Four different sites surrounding the area provide the grapes and fruit used to craft their specialty wines.

A family affair employing mostly close friends and family, they offer a variety of wines, gifts, food and a wonderful ambience in which to enjoy. Many of the food items are from other local small businesses. There is a comfy room with fireplace to settle in with friends, a cozy tasting room, an outdoor area to sit in summer as well as the newly added silo complete with a heater for a chilly Michigan autumn or winter afternoon. They also offer a limited menu of food on the weekends and a few desserts. The venue can host small group events as well.
