My hope is that together we change the lives of those without a voice of their own.” — Danitza Villanueva , 114th Anniversary Charity Ball Chairman DONATE TODAY ONLINE MARK YOUR CALENDARS! It Takes a Village CAUSE

Supporting families and ending cycles of abuse

C

hild abuse is far more widespread than people tend to believe and is an uncomfortable topic that we don’t like to talk about. Child abuse is also cyclical. It’s estimated that 75 percent of children served by the Chadwick Center for Children & Families at Rady Children’s have caregivers who have experienced their own abuse or trauma. “Child abuse and trauma feel enormous, but treatment helps kids resolve that trauma,” says Lisa Conradi, PsyD, executive director of the Chadwick Center. “Kids are resilient when they have the right kind of relationships and support around them to help them succeed. It truly takes a village, as they say. And that’s where our incredible team at the Chadwick Center steps in.” The Chadwick Center is the largest children’s advocacy center in San Diego County and cares for children and adolescents who have experienced trauma or witnessed mistreatment, violence or abuse. The team at the Chadwick Center hopes to prevent abuse by providing both short-term therapy for kids who’ve experienced trauma or witnessed an act of violence, as well as long-term treatment and mental health services for children and their families. The Chadwick Center also works with families to end the cycle of abuse and helps prepare kids to testify in court, if required. “What we’ve realized is that most child maltreatment can be the result of a loss of control, extreme frustration or a lack of emotional reserves by the caregivers. This has only been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic,” Conradi adds. “What we aim to do at the Chadwick Center is to strengthen these support systems so that families can become more resilient and better resourced so that they can thrive. We become that village for the child and for the family.”
