MATTHEW PEACH ECOC PREVIEW

Welcome to ECOC 2016 in Düsseldorf By Matthew Peach, Contributing Editor

T his year, Düsseldorf, Germany – for a few precious days in September, at least – becomes the European capital of optical communications, as it plays host to the 42nd edition of the European Conference and Exhibition on Optical Communications. This legendary conference and exhibition once again will throw light on the scientific and technical progress of the materials, devices, and systems designed for applications in optical networks, the foundation for today’s Internet, many diverse forms of communication and so much more. This year, because of heightened interest, free-space optical communication for space and satellite applications was chosen as a special topic for the event. The latest developments and trends on emerging and forward-looking research into photonics will be addressed in a complementary CLEO (Conference on Lasers and Electro- Optics) focus meeting. The conference will be accompanied by a bigger-than-ever exhibition featuring numerous leading-edge companies in the photonic system, sub-system and component space. To see everything is practically impossible, but the numerous conference and show guides, timetables and online resources should assist you in making the most of what Düsseldorf has to offer. To a large extent, the success of ECOC 2016 will depend on the attendees’ contributions and active participation. The general conference chairs – Matthias Berger, from Nokia, Nuremberg; Ronald

Freund, from the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute, Berlin have expressed their warmest welcomes to all participants. Following are some details of the conference highlights but make sure to refer to the widely-available publications and online resources, notably ecoc2016.de where you may download the programme. FOUR KEYNOTES 1. Dr. Bruno Jacobfeuerborn, Director of Technology, TelekomDeutschland and CTO of Deutsche Telekom “Optical Communication – Building the basis for best Customer Experience” will give an update on the emerging integrated telecommunications standard 5G. This will enable communication in real time that is available anywhere and anytime; and efficiently associate 50 billion “things” and billions of customers, while supporting various revolutionary applications from autonomous driving to ultra HD Virtual Reality. 2. Jeffrey Gao President, Transmission Networks and Fixed Networks, Huawei Technologies “OTN to CO, Key Implementation of Network Simplification” will consider today’s main challenges to transport networks as a result of increasing service traffic, driven by 4K/8K video, 5G communications and cloud services. How carriers can support their network architecture evolution – driven by the three main factors of: new services, new technologies and the need to reduce costs.

“Optical Communications in Space” will give an overview on space communication in general with a focus on optical communications. Although today’s “spacecom” is still dominated by radio transmission in all applicable and regulated frequency bands, optical communications offer virtually unlimited capacities without regulations. Comparisons between radio and optical communication in space will be given and an overview of the features and technologies of laser communication terminals for space will also be presented. “From scaling disparities to integrated parallelism: A decathlon for a decade” will describe the evolution of network traffic and communication technologies over the past ten years. Projections for the coming decades reveal increasingly pronounced scaling disparities between traffic demands, routing capabilities and system capacities. 4. Peter J. Winzer, Director, Optical Subsystems Research, Bell Labs Other general conference themes for your consideration, which will be presented by a variety of industry experts and academics, will include: fibres, fibre devices and amplifiers; waveguide and optoelectronic device design and fabrication; digital and optical signal processing, modeling and implementation: subsystems for optical networking and datacoms; point-to-point transmission systems; modeling, design, lab and field implementation of optical transmission fiber links; laser communication in free space; core, metro and data center networks; and access, local area and home networks.

3. Dr. Erich Auer, TETS, Head of System Engineering, Tesat-Spacecom
