TRUE NORTH

As the end of summer rolls in, just like the tide, many changes are on the horizon. My two children — my pride and joy, Jude and Juliet — will attend a new school. And here’s the best part: They will be going together! This means we won’t have to drop them off and pick them up at different places; they will also be able to support each other and may even see each other a few times throughout the day. Juliet is entering preschool, and Jude is moving up to kindergarten. To say I’m excited is an understatement — I’m ecstatic! Some of my friends will downplay this transition, but school is a big deal for me, and each grade truly matters. I can recall my early days in school, which were monumental in shaping my path. Much of what I learned solidified my foundation, and I spent the rest of my life building upon that very same foundation. The early years are essential! As a dad, it’s fun to watch Jude and Juliet do things together and interact as brother and sister, and I’m so thrilled they are embarking on this new learning journey together. When my wife and I walked into their new school and toured it, we knew a lot of life and growth would happen there. This upcoming year, the only thing I hope for is that they set their daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly intentions to be the best little people they can be. We are excited to watch them experience something brand-new, make new friends, meet new people, and learn a whole new world. For Jude and Juliet, I hope they bring the best they can offer each day. Ups and downs are bound to happen throughout each school day, but I hope they get the very best out of each day. I hope they will learn how to be kind A BRAND-NEW ADVENTURE AWAITS: JUDE AND JULIET ARE STARTING AT A NEW SCHOOL!

to others, create success, and grow up to be intelligent, happy, and kind individuals. As parents, our job is to see their beauty and encourage them along the way. From the sidelines, I will be their biggest fan. I’m not sure what my children will wind up doing in life, what sports they will play throughout high school and college, who will be their friends, or what their favorite subjects will be. While I’d love Jude to love football as I did, I’m not sure that will ever happen; ultimately, it’s for him to decide! I will support everything these children choose. I just want them to be lifetime learners and students of the game. It’s a sweet new adventure.

HOW NORDIC WALKING CAN HELP YOU GET MOVING Find Your Stride

• Reduces Joint Pain: Because Nordic walking poles help the body balance, the user’s joints (especially the back and knees, which the body typically tends to overcorrect) can find relief. • Improved Cardiovascular Health: Remember, almost any movement is good for you, and Nordic walking is no different. By getting those steps in, you’ll lower your cholesterol and enjoy improved cardiovascular fitness. • Improved Mental Health: Research shows that physical activity boosts mood while actively lowering the risk of depression. And since users of Nordic walking typically walk outdoors, they also enjoy the mental benefits of being around nature. Where can you find Nordic walking poles? The most accessible place to find Nordic walking poles is online. Retailers like Amazon and Bass Pro Shops sell the poles, but a great resource is YorkNordic.com , America’s No. 1 Nordic walking pole retailer. If you prefer to shop in person, Target, Walmart, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and athletic stores typically carry poles too. If you’d like more information on Nordic walking, you can always search the term on Google or YouTube for tips and tricks on starting the habit!

You’ve heard from your doctors, family, and friends alike how important movement is for individuals as they age. Regular walking is the best way for many older adults to get that daily movement in. But what if going for a walk is easier said than done? That’s why many older adults who suffer from balance and/or mobility issues are partaking in something called Nordic walking or pole walking. What is Nordic walking? Nordic walking is when an individual uses two chest-height poles, much like ski poles, while pushing each one into the ground with every step. The benefit of the poles is that they help the user balance and stand straight, while the act of pushing the poles into the ground actually increases upper body strength and flexibility.

What are the benefits of Nordic walking? Aside from helping with balance, strength, and mobility, Nordic walking touts a few other health benefits users can enjoy. Low Impact: Since Nordic walking uses poles to support the body through each step, there is much less impact on the joints and ligaments. •

IMPROVE YOUR RUNNING ENDURANCE WITH THESE 5 TIPS

Breathe From Your Belly The way you breathe is crucial. While running, concentrate on using your diaphragm to fill and empty your lungs. This helps to give your lungs more room to take in more air, which reduces the risk of those pesky side pains. Monitor Your Posture While running, keep your posture in mind. Avoid bending forward at the waist while running. Instead, keep your torso upright to increase your lung capacity and help you breathe more efficiently. Swing Your Arms Your arms should stay at a 90-degree angle while you run. To help propel you forward, allow them to naturally swing from your shoulders, but be sure to keep them from flailing across your chest. Remember that running is always a work in progress — to improve, you must keep at it and practice, but by incorporating these five tips into your routine, you’ll feel more confident and energized on your longer runs!

New runners can become easily frustrated when they become winded or burnt out after just a few minutes, no matter what shape their body is in. Remember, their fitness level is rarely the problem — instead, how they run or how fast they go causes them to tire quickly.

To run longer distances without getting winded fast, here are some great tips to follow.

Prepare Properly Before you set out to run, be sure to fuel your body and warm up. Your body will need the energy to span long distances and move and pump blood efficiently before you hit the pavement. Keep a Conversational Pace While running long distances, it’s essential to keep your speed steady so that you can speak in complete sentences. If you’re running alone, try singing a short song like “Happy Birthday” without gasping for air to test yourself.

HONORING A LEGEND LESSONS WE CAN LEARN FROM KOBE BRYANT

A few names come to mind when discussing NBA legends — players like Kareem Abdul- Jabbar, Bill Russell, and Michael Jordan. Kobe Bryant is always part of that conversation — not just because of his amazing talent but also because he loved basketball and played his heart out. Kobe was born on Aug. 23, 1978. Unfortunately, his life was cut short when he died in a helicopter crash on Jan. 26, 2020. In honor of the man who wore number 24, here are three lessons we can learn from Kobe. You must work hard and never give up. If Kobe wasn’t playing a game or practicing with his team, he was practicing alone. When he injured his shoulder during a game, he decided to play the game left-handed. When he was sick with a 102-degree fever, he still chose to play. And when he tore his Achilles tendon, he stayed in the game to take his free throw attempts. Kobe never gave up and always put his best foot forward, no matter the situation. Kobe’s dedication to his craft made him stand above the rest.

You can always learn something new.

During Kobe’s celebration of life ceremony, Michael Jordan recalled how Kobe would randomly text him out of the blue and ask about post-up moves, tactics, techniques, and more. Kobe was hungry for knowledge and surrounded himself with people he could learn from. He read the referee guidebook to understand the game better and even learned Italian and French to speak with his teammates and opponents. You must embrace new skills. When Kobe retired from the game in 2016, he wondered what he would do next. So, he reflected on what he enjoyed doing and found it in storytelling. He founded Granity Studios and, in 2018, won an Academy Award, a Sports Emmy, and an Annie Award for his animated short film “Dear Basketball.” When you’re in a career for a decade or more, it can be challenging to leave and start something new. But Kobe showed us that anything is possible. Thank you, Kobe, for inspiring so many people worldwide. Your passion for the game will live on forever.

Keep Children Safe With School Bus Safety

SUDOKU SOLUTION FROM PG. 3

BACK TO SCHOOL! LET’S TALK SCHOOL BUS SAFETY

School Zones — Pay attention to school zones and slow down to the marked speeds.

Back-to-school season is just around the corner! This means school buses are about to hit the roads again. Keeping all students safe as they return to the classroom means brushing up on school bus road safety! Tips for Drivers Yellow Flashing Lights — When a school bus has its yellow lights flashing, all surrounding vehicles and motorists should slow down because the bus is getting ready to stop. This also means children are either at a bus stop waiting to be picked up or will be getting off the bus and be in the area on foot. Keep your eyes peeled! Red Flashing Lights — When the red lights on a school bus flash, this is your sign to stop at least 20 feet behind where the bus is stopped to either load or unload children. You should remain stopped until the red lights stop flashing, the bus stop arm folds back, and it resumes motion.

School buses and school zones mean children are likely present. Particularly in the morning or mid- afternoon, be on the lookout! Tips for Parents and Children Talk about school bus safety with your kids. If your child is taking the bus, teach them to wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before standing up from their seat or approaching the bus to board. If your child is walking or biking to school, be sure they understand the rules of the road and never assume drivers on the road see them. Talk to them about using sidewalks whenever possible and using marked crosswalks to cross streets while obeying directions from the crossing guards near schools.
