In 2018, Joey popped up on Kala’s Facebook under “People you may know.” She sent him a friend request, and they spent a few months “liking” one another’s photos before Joey messaged Kala in June. The couple dated for nine months before Joey popped the question on March 5, 2019. They were married a little more than a year later—not once, but twice. They married legally in May 2020, followed by an August ceremony surrounded by family and friends in the hills of Liberty. They chose the 100-acre HoneyBee Hills farm near Kala’s hometown of Nitro as their venue. Bridesmaids wore long, burgundy-colored dresses and carried bouquets of light pink peonies, eucalyptus, and baby’s breath arranged by the mother of the bride; the groomsmen wore matching boutonnieres. The groom, dressed in a blue suit with a burgundy and navy-colored tie, waited for Kala at the end of the aisle. She was escorted by her father, Jeff, to an instrumental version of “Yours” by Russell Dickerson. The bride wore an ivory- colored lace trumpet dress with beading, an ivory-colored veil with a lace border, and matching ivory-colored Badgley Mischka jeweled heels. For her “something blue,” she wore a Kendra Scott bracelet with a blue stone, and her “something borrowed” was her mother’s pearl ring. The couple exchanged traditional vows. The reception took place in the venue’s barn, where guests dined on homestyle barbeque, macaroni and cheese, and green beans. The couple had a two-tiered naked vanilla cake decorated with light pink peonies and eucalyptus as well as vanilla and strawberry cupcakes with vanilla icing. Their parting gifts to family and friends were koozies that read “Cheers Y’all.” Following the wedding, they returned to Joey’s hometown of Scott Depot, where he is a firefighter and she is a nurse practitioner.
