In 2013, I stumbled upon a heartwarming sight on the internet: a small figure crafted from pipe cleaners, adorned in blue and holding a heart. It brought an instant smile to my face. Around the same time, I encountered uplifting signs posted around the city, each bearing messages that elicited the same response. In the midst of a job change and feeling lost in various aspects of my life, these simple yet joyful encounters inspired me to create Awesome Little Dude—a miniature figure fashioned from pipe cleaners, lovingly twisted together and adorned with signs bearing inspirational quotes and sayings. These creations became sources of solace, bringing hope and joy to my days, especially during the tough ones. I began leaving these figures in random places, starting with the lakeside path where my dog and I often walked. The practice soon expanded to other locations, from grocery store cheese sections to dentist waiting rooms. I even had the opportunity to gift one to Michael Franti, the musician, at one of his concerts. Additionally, I launched Facebook and Instagram pages to share the joy beyond the physical world. However, as life's challenges weighed heavily on my heart, mind, and spirit, I stopped creating these figures, descending into a dark period of despair. Yet, a pivotal moment during a family trip by the ocean served as a wake-up call, prompting me to seek help and join Hola Sober's Pledge 100 program in February 2023. Several months into my sobriety journey, I rediscovered my box of pipe cleaners and felt reinvigorated. Drawing inspiration from Hola Sober meetings, I crafted new figures adorned with quotes and lyrics that fueled my healing journey and helped me build a life worth living. Now, I'm excited to embark on a fresh chapter of this love project.
