36. 1887 N172 Old Judge Cigarettes Bid McPhee (HOF - Catch, Hands Head High) - PSA GOOD 2

Considered one of the tougher Hall of Famers in the N172 issue, manager Connie Mack played baseball before he donned his suit and tie to skipper the Philadelphia Athletics for half a century. A catcher by trade, he absorbed all he saw and spent almost a half decade helming two teams prior to Philadelphia. Shown here in Washington Nationals livery, this image offers a clear look at the team’s uniform as he prepares to hit a ball suspended on a string. N172 pose 285-3 as per Miller, Gonsowski and Masson’s Old

John “Bid” McPhee saw action at second base over eighteen major league seasons, all in Cincinnati, albeit in two different leagues. Elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 2000, a mere 101 years after he hung up his spikes. McPhee was known for his defensive prowess and unimpeachable personal character and was a long time fan favorite in the Queen City. Cards of McPhee are highly prized by advanced collectors, as he is among the toughest Hall of Famers in the N172 issue, and there are no

Judge book, the card is reasonably well-preserved, with a strong and well-developed image. The front is centered to the extreme left and exhibits corner rounding consistent with a century of careful handling. other cardboard options for hobbyists seeking a card from his playing career. This example, freshly graded by PSA and identified as 317-4 by Miller, Gonsowski and Masson is one of five in the set. Three examples of this particular card are in the PSA pop report, with this PSA 2 being the highest graded. Centered to the left, wear and creasing at the corners are seen, with the upper left’s rippling onto the image, which is dark and well-contrasted. The reverse shows various signs of age and handling.

35. 1887 N172 Old Judge Cigarettes Tommy McCarthy (HOF) - PSA VG-EX 4 (MK)

37. 1887 N172 Old Judge Cigarettes Sam Thompson (HOF) - PSA VG 3

Big Sam Thompson was one of the game’s first great sluggers with a whopping 126 career home runs. His 166 RBI in 1887 was a record that stood until it was broken by Babe Ruth in 1921 and at the time of his retirement he was second on the career home runs list. Additionally Thompson was part of the only all-.400 hitting outfield of all-time along with Tuck Turner (.416) Ed Delahanty (.407) and Billy Hamilton (.404). One of the more difficult poses of Thompson, the card is cataloged as card #456-4. The image depicts Thompson with

Outstanding midgrade example of Hall of Famer Tommy McCarthy, one of nine different poses of McCarthy known in the N172 Old Judge Cigarettes issue. Catalogued as card #301-7, this example has been graded VG-EX 4 (MK) by PSA, though the image quality and sharpness suggest a higher grade, particularly given the standards grading companies employ with the Old Judge issue. The MK qualifier appears due to some lightly erased markings on the reverse, completely irrelevant to the eye appeal of the card and yet heavily weighted in the technical grade. An exceptionally strong card that would not look out of place in a higher holder.

Detroit, dating it to 1887-88. Graded VG 3 by PSA, the card exhibits strong eye appeal, excellent image contrast for the issue, and a relatively clean surface. A stray stain on the reverse reduces the technical grade. An exceptional card of a key 19th Century Hall of Famer.
