A CURATED SELECTION OF GREAT CARDS

49. 1909-11 E90-1 American Caramel Cy Young (HOF - Boston) - SGC VG 3

51. 1914 T222 Fatima Grover Cleveland Alexander (HOF) - PSA GOOD 2

So good they named the major’s top pitching award after him, Cy Young was at the tail end of his Hall Of Fame career when American Caramel caught him with the Boston Americans in what is the candy card equivalent of T206, namely the widely issued and immensely popular E90- 1 set. E90-1 is one of a batch of interrelated caramel card issues encompassing over a half a dozen sets that used a pool of common images, but this is the only pose of Young with Boston in that

T222 Fatima of Grover Cleveland Alexander, who anchors this fascinating and historic set. The Hall of Fame pitcher’s card has received a grade of PSA 2, with horizonal creases evident and a long string of a stain that affects the reverse more than the front. A couple of small foxed dots can be seen as well. Gently removed from an old album, the reverse is intact. An important card, one of the keys to this extremely condition- sensitive issue. grouping. He’s depicted as a member of the Cleveland Americans in all of the sister issues, having been dealt to them before the start of the 1909 season, making this a doubly desirable pose. A rich, red background dominates this SGC 3 example, which exhibits some corner rounding and a slight tilt cut often seen on this issue. The back is a nice one, clean, well-rendered and the look is quite nice overall.

52. 1916 D381 Fleischmann Bakery Casey Stengel (HOF) - PSA PR 1

The Old Perfesser was once quite young and the evidence can be seen here on a tough D381 Fleischmann’s Bakery

card. Difficult in any grade, this example still has the tab attached, a small miracle and one of only two examples in the PSA pop report in such enviable shape (SGC shows one tabbed survivor). There are some scars, especially background scuffing and a couple of light creases can be seen, while a small piece of paper is lost at the lower right corner of the tab. The reverse show signs of being lightly mounted at some point. A practically impossible card of a legendary Hall of Famer, in PSA 1.

Measuring 5 3/4” x 8”, this oversized, extremely scarce set features many star players and a checklist covering both of the big league teams from Chicago. Black Sox-er Chick Gandil (not Gandel of course) swings the heavy’s lumber here on a PSA 2, one of but two examples of this card in their pop report. a snowfall of original product can be seen on the obverse along with some corner creases and additional soiling and small bit of paper loss under his hands. The picture is ideally composed, a

real testament to the skill of the photographer. The reverse, with some lesser staining than seen on the front, is the text variant.
