Love of the Game Auctions Summer, 2023 Premier Auction

53. 1912 S81 Silks #106 Tris Speaker (HOF) - SGC EX 5

Silks were a particular type of issue offered by the American Tobacco Company and were meant to be sewn onto (or into) larger objects such as pillows or blankets. Smaller versions, known in the hobby as S74’s and roughly the size of a standard tobacco card, are seen in some quantity; not so their larger S81 brethren which measure about 7 x 9 inches. S81 features 25 baseball subjects and is considered a rare and desirable issue. Speaker has four graded examples of his S81 at SGC, with this 5 exceeded by a sole 6 (PSA does not grade these). This pose of the Hall-of-Famer is the same as the one found on his T206 card and retains stunning color. Displaying typical fraying at the top and bottom and some foxing running down the left side, this is a virtually unimprovable example from a tough set.

MINIMUM BID: $1,000

54. 1919 Zeenut PCL Dazzy Vance (HOF RC) - SGC VG 3

SGC gives a range of dates for this particular card but the Gehrig portrait pose with Postcard back was seemingly issued in 1928. Gehrig didn’t say it but the phrase “It’s great to be young and a Yankee” is clearly epitomized in this smiling shot of larruping Lou. There’s some edge and corner chipping while the central image of Gehrig remains bright and appealing. The creamy reverse shows the typical wear pattern associated with vintage Exhibits, with the well struck obverse’s siren song being irresistible. PC back Exhibits have always been popular with collectors and very few Hall Of Famers are more popular than Gehrig. 55. 1926-29 Exhibits Postcard Back Lou Gehrig (HOF - Portrait) - SGC VG 3 MINIMUM BID: $1,000

The sepia-on-gray look of the 1919 Zeenuts seems like it shouldn’t work but it absolutely does. Dazzy Vance, the Hall of Fame hurler best known for climbing the hill for Brooklyn, spent all of the 1919 season in the Pacific Coast League with Sacramento, where he went 10-18 across 294 innings as he continued his erratic journey to big league greatness. Missing its coupon, which was neatly removed, SGC has graded the card VG/EX 4, with corner rounding present, and a blob of residue

along the left border seen but not distracting. The reverse has the nice, vintage look of being handled lightly in a stack or handful of these way back when.

MINIMUM BID: $500
