side of God's will would appear in the mes sage delivered. Hence, in the midst of a world that has revolted against God, with lawlessness constantly in cre a sin g , and faced with dangerous interpretations of the Scriptures because of the frailty of men, believers still have the authoritative mes sage o[ the Lord, which was given through Paul. Moreover, Paul was an apostle "accord ing to the promise of life in Christ Jesus" (v. 1). The gospel brought life to the dead —those dead in trespasses and sins—and that life was and is in Christ Jesus. He is Himself the source, sphere, sustenance, and satisfaction of it, and anything short of this meaning is not the gospel which Paul preached. Paul addressed this letter to “my be loved son.” He had found Timothy at Lys- tra, surrounded by pagan superstition (Acts 16:1; cf. 14:8-13), but having the advan tage of a home wherein both the mother and the grandmother were Christians. Timothy's father was a Greek, certainly sympathetic to Christianity, if not alto gether a Christian. Evidently Timothy had been led to faith in Christ by the apostle, and ever after these two revealed the ideal relationship between a spiritual father and his son.
