JUNE 14 The Unprecedented

be like Him for we shall see Him as He is.” Yes, we can only be like Him as we see Him. Is the eye of your faith fixed upon Him? It is only as we look into his face that we can grow into His likeness. . . . Then our blessed Lord shall see of the travail of His soul and be satisfied. God grant that our hearts may ever beat true to Him, and “so much the more,” as we “see the day approaching.” — R eginald W a llis . JUNE 19 The Constraint of Love "For the love o f Christ constraineth us” (2 Cor. 5:14). Thou shalt learn that the days called ad verse were the making of thee, that the seasons of thy spiritual growth were the hours of thy night. And when thou count est up the gifts of divine love, thou shalt class amongst the brightest of them all those that, in the course of the journey, came to thee as denials of thy prayer; thou shalt look upon the crosses of thy life and say, “The love of Christ constrained me.” — G eorge M a th eso n .-

"There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?" (John 6 :9 ). Are we quite sure that it honors God most to expect evil to be worn down only by imperceptible degrees? Might it not be a greater evidence of faith and bring God more glory if sometimes we dared to pray for the unprecedented? Sometimes! W e are not to ask for the sensational: we are never to seek for the spectacular; but, not under valuing the ordinary and the usual, why should we not sometimes dare to pray for the unprecedented? — S elected . "Jesus himself drew near" (Lk. 24:15). In the fact that Jesus Himself drew near to sad and needy hearts, there is nothing unique. It is perfectly usual; it is the thing He does; and in doing it He was simply carrying out that wonderful revelation which He came to make . . . Whether it was the storm on the lake, or sorrow in the lane, or failure at the mountain foot, or fear in the upper room—whatever was the cir cumstance of need, we see Jesus coming near, and as He draws near—what a dif ference it makes!—H. J. B a rk er . JUNE 16 Be Not Afraid "Be o f g ood cheer; it is I; be not afraid" (Matt. 14:27). O child of God, He loveth thee, And thou art all His own; With gentle hand He leadeth thee, Thou dost not walk alone; And though thou watchest wearily The long and stormy night, Yet in the morning joy will come, And fill thy soul with light. — S elec ted . JUNE 17 The Beauty of Christ "F or how great is his goodness, and how great is his beauty!" (Zech. 9:17). To the world there is no “beauty nor comeliness” in Jesus. To us He is the brightness of God's glory . . . We especi ally notice this beauty in Him as Mediator. Cheerfully He bore the appointed suffer ings. When in the garden and upon the cross, “his visage was marred more than any man’s,” to the eye of faith His beauty was most conspicuous. Obedience unto death is the fruit of His love, and the price of our redemption. May our eyes be opened to see Christ’s beauty. May our medita tion on Christ be sweet.—J. M in n em a . JUNE 15 Jesus Himself "And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure” (1 John .3:3). Says the apostle, in effect, “Seeing we have this hope, let us see to it that we are like Him now, for likeness to Christ de pends upon our vision of Him. W e shall JUNE 18 A Purifying Hope

"If when ye do well, and suffer for it, y e take it patiently, this is acceptable with God" (1 Pet. 2:20). W e make a mistake in trying always to clear ourselves; we should be wiser to go straight on, humbly doing the next thing, and leaving God to vindicate us. He will bring forth our righteousness as the light, and our lives when we shall be misunder stood, slandered, falsely accused. At such times it is very difficult not to act on the policy of the men around us in the World. They at once appeal to law and force and public opinion. But the believer takes his case into a higher court, and lays it before his God.— F . B. M e y er . JUNE 22 The Comfort of God "The Comforter, which is the Ghost" (John 14:26). The Holy Spirit consoles, but Christ is the consolation. If we may use the figure, the Holy Spirit is the Physician, but Jesus is the medicine. He heals the wound, but it is by applying the holy ointment of Christ’s name and grace. He takes not of His own things, but of the things of Christ . . . If the one be the Comforter, the other is the Comfort. Now, with such rich pro- Holy
