STAY ACTIVE AS A FAMILY! Ideas to Make Exercise Fun
As Dr. Sladic covered in his cover article this month, our children learn how to be healthy by watching us. So, when it comes to teaching the value of regular exercise, why not get the whole family involved? Here are some easy ideas to do just that! Go for a hike or a walk. It doesn’t have to be complex! Choose your favorite park or a wooded area, and explore nature as a family. You’ll enjoy quality time outside, and your heart will appreciate this easy cardiovascular exercise. If you don’t want to travel too far, simply walk outside your door, and stroll through the neighborhood. You can make this task a little more fun by baking a treat for your neighbors and walking it over! Ride your bike. Make evening bike rides part of your family’s wellness routine. Choose a route and see if you can improve your time. Or, choose a new park to explore every Saturday afternoon. You could also swap out your standard vehicle with your bike for some of your errands, ensuring the whole family gets some exercise while the chores get done. Whatever you choose to do, biking is a great way to do it. It’s low impact, provides work for your heart, and it’s easy for almost anyone to do. Make it a competition. Fuel some competitive spirit! Each week, make it a contest to see who can do the most jumping jacks, crunches, “x jumps,” squats, and other exercises in two minutes. Or, log your miles after every hike and bike ride to see who went the farthest that month. (This works best if you don’t ride or walk together!) At the end of the competition, let the victor choose a treat for dessert, a special meal for supper, or a nice prize the whole family wants. Staying active is a valuable part of a healthy lifestyle, but if pain and immobility are limiting your opportunities for wellness with your family, Dr. Sladic can help.
