SAFETY & FIRE
BE PROACTIVE IN COMMUNITY SAFETY
As summer winds down and fall returns, Chanhassen begins its seasonal shift—kids head back to school, daylight hours grow shorter and our community settles into new routines. This time of year offers a great opportunity to reflect on what keeps our city strong: connection and vigilance. Whether you're cheering on the Storm at a football game, walking the trails around Lake Ann surrounded by vibrant fall colors or simply commuting to work, public safety plays a part in each of those moments. At the Sheriff's Office, our job isn’t just to respond when something goes wrong—it’s to help prevent issues before
they happen. That starts with awareness and partnership. So as you enjoy all that fall has to offer, we ask you to keep a few things in mind: drive a little slower with wet leaves on the roads, keep an eye out in school zones and don’t hesitate to report suspicious activity in your neighborhood. These everyday actions make a big difference. We're proud to serve this community and even prouder of the way Chanhassen residents look out for one another. Thank you for continuing to be our partners in keeping this city safe, season after season.

SMOKE ALARMS & FIRE
CHANHASSEN FIRE DEPARTMENT
Smoke alarms are a key part of a home fire escape plan. When there is a fire, smoke spreads fast. Working smoke alarms give you an early warning so you can get outside quickly. Safety Tips for Smoke Alarms at Home
Safety Tips: »

reduce false alarms. They should be at least 10 feet (3 meters) from the stove. People who are hard of hearing or deaf can use special alarms. These alarms have strobe lights and bed shakers. Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old. Check the backside for the manufacturing date. Most modern smoke alarms can also make a chirping sound: one chirp per minute may mean you have a low battery; three chirps means the alarm is malfunctioning and five chirps signals that the alarm is due for replacement soon. What can cause a false alarm? Smoke from burnt food or cooking Fireplace smoke or outdoor campfires blowing indoors
Alarm due for a replacement
Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, as well as in the basement. Large homes may need extra smoke alarms. It is best to use interconnected smoke alarms. When one smoke alarm sounds, they all sound. Test all smoke alarms at least once a month. Press the test button to be sure the alarm is working. Replace batteries when needed. Current alarms on the market employ different types of technology, including multi-sensing, which could combine smoke and carbon monoxide. These types of alarms may only last 7-10 years. Today’s smoke alarms will be more technologically advanced to respond to a multitude of fire conditions, yet mitigate false alarms. A smoke alarm should be placed on the ceiling or high on a wall. Keep smoke alarms away from the kitchen to

A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire. Smoke alarms should be installed inside every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area and on every level. Smoke alarms should be connected so that when one sounds, they all sound. Most homes do not have this level of protection. Roughly three out of five fire deaths happen in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.

Smoke Alarm Disposal: When you need to dispose of your smoke or CO alarm, you may throw away the alarm and battery in your regular garbage (if you can physically remove the battery). If you are not able to remove a battery because it has a circuit board, it may have a lithium-ion battery and hazardous waste in it. In that case, you may take it to the Carver County Environmental Center located in Chaska. They encourage residents to call (952) 361-1835 if they have any battery disposal questions.

CITY BUDGET & FINANCES
FINANCE
City Receives Clean Audit Opinion The city’s independent auditor expressed the opinion that the city’s Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) for the fiscal year 2024 fairly presents the financial position of the city in all material respects and in conformity with generally accepted accounting principles in the United States. In other words, the city received a “clean” audit opinion. You can review the 2024 ACFR on the city’s website at ChanhassenMN.gov/FinancialReports . The city has applied to the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) to receive the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financing Reporting Award for its 2024 ACFR. The city has received this award for thirty-two consecutive years.
City Receives Distinguished Budget Presentation Award The city has received the GFOA’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its 2025 Budget Book. This is the second time the city has received this award. In order to receive this award, a governmental unit must publish a budget document that meets the program criteria as a policy document, as a financial plan, as an operations guide and as a communications device. You can view the 2025 Budget Book on the city’s website at ChanhassenMN.gov/ FinancialReports Property Tax Dollar Distribution For 2025, the City of Chanhassen receives 20 cents of each residential property tax dollar paid (based on a $500,000 home in the I.S.D. 112 school district). Annual Cost of City Services for 2025 Chanhassen has the lowest cost of annual services (property taxes plus utility billing) compared to neighboring and similarly sized cities in the metro area.
Chanhassen receives 20 cents of every residential property tax dollar (based on a $500,000 residential property).

Fiber Optic Network Installations: What’s the latest?
It’s been nearly 10 months since Comcast began expanding its fiber network in Chanhassen. Since then, many neighborhoods have been connected to high-speed internet—but we know the process hasn’t been easy. Residents have dealt with digging, disruption and cleanup. And just when one company finishes, another may begin. That’s because most providers build and maintain their own separate networks. Most work happens underground via service boxes and handholes (small utility enclosures that access fiber, electrical or telecom lines), typically located in public rights-of-way or utility easements that can extend into front yards. Contractors must restore any
impacted areas, but this can take time. Comcast expects to finish installation in 2025, with yard restoration continuing into 2026 in some areas. Other providers may follow with their own construction timelines. To check the status in your neighborhood, visit our Fiber Buildout Status Viewer Map at ChanhassenMN.gov/fiber-optic-buildout and enter your address. We appreciate your patience. If you have questions, contact the number on your door hanger. For unresolved concerns, reach out to the city’s Engineering Department.

WATER RESOURCES & FALL YARD CARE
WATER RESOURCES/FALL YARD CARE
Meter Reading/Leak Info Meter readings are a valuable tool for detecting water leaks because they provide a clear and measurable record of water usage. Here's how they help: Identifying Unusual Water Usage By regularly checking your water meter, you can spot unexpected spikes in water consumption. If your usage suddenly increases without a clear reason (e.g., no extra household activity), it could indicate a hidden leak. Performing a Leak Test You can use your water meter to test for leaks: » Turn off any known running water in your home. » Check the meter and see if it begins to change. If it does, you likely have a leak. If the meter doesn’t change immediately, wait for one to two hours without using any water. » Recheck the meter. If the reading has changed, it suggests water is flowing somewhere, likely due to a slower leak.
Tracking Continuous Flow Many modern water meters have a small dial or indicator that moves when water is flowing. If this dial moves even when no water is being used, it’s a sign of a potential leak. Pinpointing Leak Severity Consistent monitoring of meter readings over time can help you determine the scale of the leak. A slow, steady increase in usage might indicate a minor issue, while a sharp rise could point to a major leak. Common household items that cause leaks » Toilets » Water faucets » Water softeners » Outdoor irrigation systems Regularly checking your meter helps you catch leaks early, saving water and money while preventing potential property damage.
What is Illicit Discharge?
Illicit discharge is any discharge into the public storm sewer system that is harmful to the health or welfare of people, the environment, wildlife or surface waters. Illicit discharges into public stormwater systems are prohibited by federal and state law. The City of Chanhassen is committed to identifying and reducing illicit discharge into its storm sewer system in order to protect our abundant natural resources including lakes, streams and wetlands. Public surface waters are sources of wildlife food and provide such recreational opportunities as swimming, boating and fishing, which can all be negatively affected by stormwater pollutants. Illicit discharges include such items as: » sediment coming from construction sites or other unstabilized (bare) ground » yard waste (grass clippings/leaves) deposited into a storm drain » oil, grease, antifreeze or paint that is dumped or flows into a storm drain, including wash water from cleaning with chemicals » sewage from broken sewer lines or overflow from private septic systems » pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers Illicit discharges could be intermittent (only occurring a few minutes per day or a few days per year), continuous (occurring almost daily) or transitory (only occurring once). If you notice illegal or suspicious discharge into a storm sewer inlet or curb ditch or if you notice any discharge that appears unnatural, you should report the problem in one of the following ways: » Call the city’s Engineering Division at (952) 227-1162 . » Call 911 if you suspect the issue requires immediate attention or is an illegal activity. » Report on the See-Click-Fix app or on the website at ChanhassenMN.gov/SeeClickFix For more information, contact the city's Water Resource’s Technician, Ryan Pinkalla, at rpinkalla@chanhassenmn.gov or at (952) 227-1173
Leaf Litter & Water Quality
Wherever leaves fall, they decompose and restock the soil with nutrients and organic matter. But when there is no soil to land on — such as on a street, driveway or sidewalk — the leaves and all their decomposing bits wash down the street and into the city's storm drains. From there, they go directly into storm ponds, wetlands, lakes and creeks, where the nutrients are food for unwanted algae growth. In addition to a major "ick" factor, algae is a problem because it uses up oxygen and blocks sunlight that fish and native plants need. Please don't "leaf" it up to someone else to dispose of your leaves! Here's what to do with your autumn leaves so that they nourish the soil and do not contribute to unwanted algae and poor water quality: » Rake the leaves that have accumulated along your curb, sidewalk and alley. » Never trash or burn your leaves. » Put leaves in your backyard compost pile. » Use leaves to mulch your garden and lawn. » Drop leaves off at a compost site or consider curbside pick-up for more convenience. Residents may drop off yard waste at our Public Works yardmwaste site Mondays through Fridays during business hours through November 15. More information about the yard waste drop off can be found on page 11 or on our website at ChanhassenMN.gov/yardwaste

BLUFFS & THE SENIOR CENTER
IS THAT A BLUFF IN MY BACKYARD?
If your property has steep slopes, it may be considered a bluff. A bluff is defined by a rise of at least 25 feet and a slope average of 30 percent or greater. Slopes less than 18 percent over 50 feet distance shall not be considered a part of the bluff. When a steep slope meets the definition of a bluff, a bluff impact zone is established to further protect the integrity of that bluff. The bluff impact zone is considered the bluff itself as well as the land located within 20 feet of the top of the bluff. Like the bluffs themselves, bluff impact zones are also subject to additional regulations for vegetation management and construction activities.
Removal or alteration of vegetation within a bluff impact zone is prohibited except for limited pruning and trimming of trees. This work must receive approval from city staff. Clearcutting within a bluff impact zone is never permitted. This protection prevents erosion, maintains natural character and protects water quality and wildlife habitat. Proper vegetation management is essential to maintaining the stability and natural integrity of bluffs and ensuring the safety of nearby public and private property. If you have any questions, city staff are here to help. Please don’t hesitate to reach out!
THE QUESTION I GET ASKED THE MOST IS... I don't feel old... is the Senior Center really for me? I hear this a lot—especially from people in their late 50s or early 60s who say, “I don’t feel like a senior.” And I get it. Aging looks very different today than it did a generation ago. People are living longer, staying active and redefining what it means to be 55+. Our new Senior Center is designed with an active aging attitude in mind. Whether you're still working, newly retired or simply looking for ways to stay connected, our programs reflect the energy and interests of today’s active older adults. It’s not about how old you feel—it’s about what you want to explore next. Still not sure? Consider joining us for our Active Aging Week, October 6-10. It's a week full of activities designed to engage and give you a sampling of what we have on deck at the Senior Center. Active Aging Week will include Move It Monday, Town Talk & Tortillas with Mayor Ryan, Wellness Expo, Thursday Treks with Doug Ohman and Fun Finish Friday - Game Edition. For more information on these activities, check out page 17 of this magazine or head to our website at ChanhassenMN.gov/Seniors

FALL 2025 | CITY OF CHANHASSEN
A Safer Walk to the Park and School
MAKING A DIFFERENCE For Chanhassen residents heading to or from City Center Park and Chanhassen Elementary School, their walk just got safer. A new pedestrian crossing improvement was installed this spring along Kerber Boulevard that creates a more secure route for walkers, bikers and parkgoers of all ages. The design is simple and cost-effective—but the impact is anything but small. This crossing, located just across from the City Center Park entrance, includes key safety features intended to slow down vehicle traffic and make pedestrians more visible. Flexible reflective delineators and in-street pedestrian signs have been installed on the pavement that reduce lane widths and, in return, slow vehicular traffic. These low-impact, high-visibility treatments are part of the city’s broader effort to improve walkability and prioritize safety near parks, trails and schools. Kerber Boulevard sees high foot traffic throughout the year,
particularly during warmer months when families and children head to the park or the school. Previously, crossing the road could be difficult—especially during peak traffic hours. The new improvements help reduce those concerns, encouraging more residents to walk or bike instead of drive. The best part? This isn’t just a one-off fix. It’s part of a series of pedestrian-focused enhancements being rolled out across Chanhassen. By using proven, low-cost safety strategies, the city is stretching every dollar to deliver maximum impact in the areas residents use most. Whether you're heading to the schoolor playground, out for a jog or walking the dog, these upgrades mean safer streets and more peace of mind. With more improvements planned citywide, this project reflects a growing commitment to making Chanhassen not only a great place to live—but a great place to walk, too.
Why Does the City Say It’s a "Community for Life"?
CHAN 101:
More Than a Motto “Community for Life” isn’t just a slogan—it’s a principle that shapes how Chanhassen grows and serves its residents. Developed during a strategic planning retreat with city leaders in 2021, the phrase reflects a commitment to supporting people at every stage of life. You’ll find it in council materials, park planning meetings and public communications—anchoring the city’s identity and vision for the future. Bringing Families Together Chanhassen is designed for connection. From Tot Time in the gym to teen rec leagues and citywide festivals, the Parks and Recreation programs offer something for every age. It’s a place where grandparents, parents and kids all find ways to stay active and engaged.
Planning for a Lifelong Home Older adults are a growing part of the community—soon to be nearly 25 percent of the population. The Senior Center offers trips, classes and programs that keep life full of energy and purpose. It's one of many ways the city supports residents aging in place. Leadership with Vision The Commission on Aging helps shape age-friendly policies— from expanded SW Prime transit service to accessible trails and affordable housing. Their work ensures Chanhassen stays livable for everyone. A City for Every Chapter “Community for Life” means more than longevity—it means a lasting sense of belonging. Whether you’re just starting out, raising a family or enjoying retirement, Chanhassen is built to grow with you.

CIVIC CAMPUS & COMMUNITY CENTER
WHAT'S UP WITH...
New Civic Campus Phase 1 of the Chanhassen Civic Campus is nearly complete! This initial phase, which includes City Hall, Council Chambers and the Senior Center, will open later this year. Construction crews are finishing the siding, installing windows, preparing the site for paving and applying the interior finishes. The new City Hall was designed with residents in mind, featuring an improved service counter, enhanced accessibility and a seamless connection to the Chanhassen Library for easy access to city services and educational resources. We’ll officially welcome the new building with a public open house this fall. Residents will be invited to come explore the fresh, modern space and learn more about what’s inside. The Senior Center—designed specifically for adults 55+—includes enrichment spaces, areas for social events, a heated walkway and a covered outdoor patio perfect for pop-up events, casual gatherings or simply enjoying the view. We can’t wait to welcome you to this new hub for connection, service and community life.
Chanhassen Bluffs Community Center Since voters approved funding for the Chanhassen Bluffs Community Center last fall, the city has taken major steps forward. A design team—led by BKV Group and supported by The Sports Facilities Companies—has been selected and planning is well underway. Staff and City Council toured nearby centers, held multiple design workshops and secured a 13-acre site at Powers Blvd. and Hwy 212. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2026. Recent discussions have focused on layout, walkability and energy efficiency, with strong interest in a geothermal HVAC design and flexible programming. Preliminary site concepts are currently under review. In June, the City Council approved the sale of $13.185 million in bonds to fund land and design costs, locking in a favorable interest rate and affirming the city’s AAA credit rating. We remain committed to keeping residents informed and involved throughout the process and will soon share opportunities for you to add your input.
