A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEADTEACHER Well done to those who took part in the European Youth Orchestra at the weekend. It was an absolute pleasure to attend and watch our students making friends and producing such a spectacular concert after only a few days of group practice with their counterparts from across Europe. It was a wonderful event and for those of you unable to attend at the weekend there is a video here. I have also been hearing from Year 9 about their adventures over the weekend doing their Duke of Edinburgh practice expedition and enjoying some Waldegrave’s Got Talent. Well done to them all and fingers crossed for a brighter final expedition at the end of the month. This week our Year 12 English students enjoyed a trip to Keats House in North London. This was a wonderful opportunity for students to deepen their appreciation of the poet’s life as they study his work ahead of their romantic poetry examination this year. Our Sixth Form also had the pleasure of welcoming Medical Insight to the school, where students met with a selection of medical professionals to learn about different roles within this discipline. They met with nurses, doctors, vets and paramedics. The Summer break is rapidly approaching, with only six weeks filled with trips and events, the holidays will be here before we know it. Have a good weekend and Happy Father’s Day to all the Dads in our school community.

Many of you will be aware that the summer holidays, as well as the Christmas break, can be some of the most challenging times for some young people. With much of the scaffolding and support that students rely on during school, like having access to a safe space, designated staff members, or trusted adults being temporarily unavailable, some students may find it harder to cope. Our partners at Kooth often see a significant increase in usage of their free to access platform during the summer, as young people seek support when their usual school resources aren’t available. To help those supporting young people during this time, Kooth is running some free 30 minute parent and carer webinars focusing on how to encourage children to access Kooth, ensuring that they have access to mental health support during the summer holidays. Kooth Parent Webinar: How Kooth Can Support Students During the Summer Holidays. When: Monday 7th July, Tuesday 8th, Thursday 10th and Friday 11th July Time: 6:00pm–6:30pm (each evening) Where: Online at this link or https://forms.gle/R2w4bGi8tmrYvvXQ6 These sessions are free and hosted online, making them easily accessible.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 13
Well done to all our year 13 students who have been working so hard throughout the exam period- only one week left to go. They all deserve a restful break and we look forward to celebrating the end of sixth form with them on the 20th June at the celebration assembly. Congratulations to Henry Tyson who has been accepted as an apprentice engineer with Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) . It’s one of only 10 places and GTR is the largest train operator in the UK, so he’s done extremely well to get through. Henry has accepted the role and is looking forward to start- ing after his exams. A reminder that the year 13 celebration assembly will be taking place on the 20th June. The creative arts exhibition will be from 4-5pm where you can view the photography, fashion and art final pieces. We are so proud of all our students and the exceptional work they create. The celebration assembly will be from 5-6pm in the hall and there will be refreshments for students straight after from 6-7pm. A letter has been sent out with a google form reserving your place. We look forward to seeing you all there.
Have a lovely weekend!
MRS PUGH, HEAD OF YEAR 13
‘A Room of One’s Own’, by Virginia Woolf This poetically powerful extended essay takes readers on a journey through the history of female writers, as we witness first hand the barriers of structural inequality placed in the path of the female sex. This cornerstone of feminist literature beautifully explores the immense power of personal and feminist interpretation, which cannot be recreated by males with complete literary freedom and space. Woolf’s examination of the patriarchal bookshelves, which leave no room for female narrative voices, ignites a desire to shine a light upon the women who broke the locks placed on literary conventions, finally enabling women to write fiction of their own without interruption. Reading this will transform how you perceive the role of the female voice in literature today. BOOK OF THE MONTH
