This is only half the job. The other half must be in direct evangelism so the Timothys cannot only hear what you say but also see how you do it, experi menting as scientists would. This is the only way to have a real dynamic Christianity in a foreign country. Jesus began to do and teach. Christian education in China backfired because they left out this principle. With the principle of d i rect evangelism went the fire and with this gone, modernism came in. A London Times headline read: ‘‘Missionary Education in China Backfires.” The arti cle continued: “ The reorganization of China’s univer sities is completed. There is a merging or disappear ance of universities founded or maintained on foreign Christian initiative. These universities operated by missionaries in the past fifty years have produced a great crop of graduates who are the leaders of com munism in China today. Thus ended the phase of Christian education in China that lasted more than half a century. Ironically, it has been ended by a regime in whose ranks are many of its products." Herein lies the stumbling block to this 2 x 2 system which can be overlooked and overworked and in many places backfire. You can’t anymore teach spiritual truth to an unsaved man than you can teach a pig how to operate an adding machine. The Bible says God’s truths are “ spiritually discerned” and they are “ foolishness" to the unsaved. The Gospel is the power of God unto salvation and it is not the analyzing of this Gospel but the proclamation that brings souls to Christ. However, it is very difficult to train a man if you aren’t getting close to him, living where he is and not putting up any artificial barriers. The first thing that’s heard when a man falls is not a prayer, but an excuse, an attempt to rationalize why this worker fell away. Many times the reason is that the mission ary didn’t get close to the man with whom he was working. The missionary stayed in his big house and Timothy came to him. He never saw how the national was living or learned his way of thinking. There’s another telling Japanese proverb: Nikai kara megusuri, meaning, "pouring out eye medicine,” as from a second floor window to a man standing on the street. I’m afraid many missionaries are guilty of this. Paul says “ to commit these things to faithful men who shall be able to teach others also.” Paul did it. So with the divine balance in our hands, not only commit to these faithful men, but also to lead them out to soul-winning avenues, we must not fail. Someone said the only way to lead a national on a mission field is to get behind him and push. There’s also another way of leading: to plant an idea and let it go and come back to it sometime later and see how it sank in. It was planted in his head and heart, and he will come to you, asking about it. All the time he simply thought of the idea you put in his mind. “ God is able,” if we are willing "to do exceed ing abundantly above all we can ask or think.” KB OCTOBER, 1970
