So I would encourage any person who finds it possible to do so, to take driving instruction even though it may seem late in the day to be learning such a skill. It will add a whole new dimension of usefulness to your life, besides making you independent. As you put your trust in the Lord, He will give you a peace from the fears that are associated with trying something new in the later years. well-being but they discouraged me and almost frightened me out of the whole idea. “ I went through with it, though, and I got my license more than a year and a half ago. I’ve been driv ing ever since, without one single difficulty. I take in the Christian activities that would have been out of reach for me, many times, with out my own transportation." Q. I have never learned to drive a car and now, in my late 50’s, I find myself tremendously handicapped. I would so very much like to be able to attend some Christian functions and I have no way of getting there. Do you think, Dr. Narramore, that a woman of my age can learn to drive or are there too many prob lems connected with such a ven ture? Of course, without knowing much more about you, I have no way of assessing the kind of problems that could arise as you try to learn to drive. But I can tell you that many women much older than you have successfully mastered the art of driving a car in our speedy age. I would suggest, first of all, that you arrange to have a professional instructor of driver education as your teacher. He can be quite ob jective and stick to the matter in hand, while a relative or friend can not always be quite so objective. I sup pose it was a form of showing how much they cared for my safety and 46
