A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 8

We are well and truly back into the swing of things. This week I have been encouraged to see how hard ourYear 8s have been working in their various subjects. I had the pleasure of wandering into a Year 8 science class where they were taking part in a Rocket Launching Challenge. I was particularly impressed by their fabulous rocket designs. Their enthusiasm for learning was great to see. During form time Year 8 have been debating various topics and over the next couple of weeks they will be discussing hot topics such as Environment, Summer Holidays and Homework and the use of mobile phones. Tutors will be encouraging their classes to give their opinions and discuss. It has been great to see Year 8 engaging so well in this activity. This week was the second round of the Borough Athletics Team Trials for the track events. It has been very encouraging to see so many Year 8s putting themselves forwards and striving for a personal best on track. A reminder that the Athletics Club is for all years is on Thursdays after school and with sports day on the horizon this is a great place to practice throwing, jumping or running events.

MRS LYDDON, HEAD OF YEAR 8 On Tuesday we had the first in a series of assemblies about “Our Air, Our Action.”Year 8 discussed the issues of air pollution and climate change and started thinking about how they can help make things better. Students will have the opportunity to be part of a group of 18 volunteers from Years 7-8 to work through four workshops. A reminder about punctuality. Wedo ask students to arrive at school for 8:30, allowing 5 minutes to get to form time. Form time begins at 8:35 and students are expected to be punctual for that. Thank you for your support with this at home. Our top three epraise individual leaders this week are Yovela H (8PIR), Marharyta K (8PIR), and Viola C (8SHU) very well done to those individuals. Our top form this week is 8PUN! The epraise shop is now open, and students have until Friday 20th June 2025 to spend their points.

‘Arsenic For Tea’ by Robin Stevens A murder-mystery, with two curious girls as the main protagonists – Daisy Wells and Hazel Wong. As chaos unfolds around them, they try to solve the clues like full-on detectives, but unpaid, of course. Daisy’s mother throws a tea party, with the whole family invited but when one of them mysteriously falls ill with food poisoning and then passes away Wells and Wong are suspicious. Who could have done it, and how? The book is a thrilling read, as you unpick the clues with our protagonists. To suspect a character and find out the truth is a whole adventure without having to leave home. I picked this book from the series specifically because of how suspenseful it was. Almost every character seemed like the culprit, every single one of them acted edgy, so it was even harder to work out. This is the second book in the series, so I recommend reading the first book first, but there are other books in the series as well, so if you enjoyed this one, there are many more to enjoy! BOOK OF THE MONTH
