parables and pearls (AS FEATURED OVER "TH E BIOLA HOUR")

ACCESSORIES OR ESSENTIALS An interesting scene was found in a group of teenagers who were hav ing the time of their lives driving around in an old Model “A” Ford. No one could miss the decrepit car which was broadly announced by a variety of rattles, groans, creeks and sputters. The fenders seemed to be flapping in the breeze and the motor was churn ing. But this didn’t bother the young people. Interestingly enough they had equipped their jalopy with all sorts of accessories imaginabe. There were dual horns, spotlights, chrome trim mings, all of which would outfit a $15 car with more than $250 worth of “extras." How much such a scene is like the parable of life itself. Without question there are many people who are much more concerned with the trappings of life than they are with life itself. Personal acceptance of the Lord Jesus Christ by each individual is the only thing which will count for eternity. The lost came to the Lord Jesus Christ while He was here in His earthly ministry, and He declared un to them, “Labor not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life. Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.” * * * God never alters the robe of righteousness to fit the man, but the man to fit the robe. * * * UNDER GOD'S BANNER Centuries ago, a little city found it self in the confines of ancient Rome. A PROMISE OF PRAYERLESSNESS Just because a person professes to be a Christian doesn’t mean he actu ally possesses eternal life. The apostle James asks the poignant question, “What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? Can faith save him?” That great servant of the Lord, Charles Haddon Spurgeon, pastor in London, England, once met a man who told him that he didn’t believe in God. Mr. Spurgeon conducted an in teresting experiment. He said, “Sir, if you’U promise me that you’ll never pray for the rest of your life, I ’ll give you this ten pound note.’’ The atheist looked at him for a moment and then stomped his feet and marched off. When he got home, the man told his wife what had happened. She thought on the matter and then suggested, “Regardless of how we’ve lived be fore, we never know when we might need to call on God. Perhaps we’ll need Him someday, but He won’t hear us.” They continued to think about the un usual offer on into the night. The next day, both of them sought out Dr. Spurgeon and ultimately gave their hearts to Christ. I f in your life, or in the life of a loved one, there seems to be no room for Christ, ask the ques tion, “Would I be willing to make a bargain that for the rest of my life I would never pray?” Think about the possible sickness that could come; about your children who might fall in to sin; about the valley of the shadow of death that someday will encircle your life or the life of one nearest and dearest to you. Jesus says, “Call upon me and I will answer thee and show thee great and mighty things which thou knowest not.” Will you call upon Him today?
