whiskey. At the top of the sign, where the electric lights flash on and off illuminating the area where the brain was supposed to be, a discoloration ap peared on the sign. Especially by day light'there could be seen a sharp al teration in the appearance of the fore head which had been “baked” by the repeated heat of the lights to which it had been exposed. The brain looked like it had been cooked. It was brown ish in color. What a tragic symbol this portrays of what happens to many a man who yields to such false propa ganda. This is why Scripture says, “Be ye not among winebibbers.” Dr. M. R. DeHaan gives us this interest ing poem concerning the compromis ing churchgoer. The man at the tavern was cheerful and mellow, Said he, “I don’t mind that poor Sun day school fellow! Though he goes to his church, at my parties he’s truer, For each drink that he takes is his vote for the brewer!” * The devil is not afraid of a Bible that has dust on it. * * * Unless there is within us that which is above us, we shall soon yield to that which is about us. . . . UNUSUAL LAWS There are some interesting laws enforced in various areas which may seem strange to us and yet generally have some very practical value behind them. In one of our desert states there is a fine, varied by the circumstances, for letting a live rattler get away. Motorists are required by law to steer their cars over snakes which may be sunning themselves on the highways. In San Francisco, because of hilly streets, a car parked wheels parallel to the curb is supposed to evoke a traffice fine. Front tires are to be turned in toward the curb to reinforce the brakes. It is reported that about 50 cars run away a month in San Francisco. In Caracas, Venezuela, the shooting of a buzzard is punished by * *

a fine of $100. That is because the buzzards, which circle over the capi tal city, fly down and keep the streets clear of refuse by carrying off litter. There is an incontrovertable law in God’s Word, however, which tells us, “The soul that sinneth, it shall die.” “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” “There is none that doeth good." “All our righteous ness are as filthy rags;" and “. . . the wages of sin is death.” So “condemna tion is passed to all men, for that all have sinned.” We have all broken God’s laws, but how merciful is the Supreme Judge as we come to Him and, through Christ, plead our case. The Bible says, “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us.” For as many as believe on Christ’s name, to them gives he the power to become the sons of God. * Too many people are trying to shine for Jesus, without really burning for Him. A NEW BIBLE A famous French philosopher deter mined he would write a book which would far transcend the Bible. He carefully arranged his material and then took it to a publisher for consid eration. After some time had elapsed he went back to call for it asking what the publisher’s opinions were. He received the frank comments, “I t’s a very brilliant work, but I question that it will be accepted. To do that you must first live it, then you must teach it, and finally you must, in living a perfect life, be crucified for it. Only then would it compete with the Bible.” The man grabbed his manuscript and stormed from the room. Only Jesus Christ could have fulfilled all of those requirements. Only He can give eter nal life. Listen to His blessed words, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condem nation; but is passed from death unto life” (John 5:21). 31 * * * * *
