Obstruction of airways, respiratory disorders
Reasons for obstruction of airways, breathing - not breathing
Threats
First Aid to an unresponsive, breathing casualty
Placing of a casualty in the recovery position and use of the rescue blanket
The Course Participants (Delegates) shall practice and demonstrate:
Checking airways
Removal of occluding objects
Recovery position - single First Aider
Recovery position - two First Aiders
Correct treatment of a casualty with an obstructed airway following a step wise approach according to national best practice with airway management devices (according to country/company regulations):
a. Use of manual suction
b. Use of a nasopharyngeal tube
c. Use of an oropharyngeal tube (Guedel) and/or
d. Use of a supraglottic airway device e.g. I-gel, Laryngeal Tube
ELEMENT 5.5 - B: BREATHING - CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR)
The Instructor shall explain and demonstrate :
Casualty position needed to facilitate breathing
How to perform a breathing assessment
Serious chest injuries and their treatment, including the use of chest seals
Casualties not breathing
Reasons for being unresponsive, not breathing and threats
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) through the use of training dummies
Performing CPR on adults - single First Aider correct use of AED and ventilatory equipment
Performing CPR on adults - two First Aiders correct use of AED and ventilatory equipment
The capabilities and the different technical specifications of AEDs
AED safety procedures including environment conditions
Correct treatment of a casualty who requires ventilatory support including:
a. Use of a pocket face mask
b. Use of a bag valve mask (two-person technique for bag-mask ventilation is recommended according to ERC guidelines)
