Differentiating undergraduate and graduate public affairs education, especial ly 3/2 and 4/1 programs Thurs. 3:45 – 4:05pm EDT Given increasing tuition costs, constrained budgets, and now dire employment prospects, 3/2 and 4/1 programs have become an attractive option for students to earn both undergraduate and graduate degrees in less time. This panel investigates these programs in an environment in which there are demands to further differentiate undergraduate and graduate curricula. The panel will discuss how these programs are structured, how to minimize mimicking by addressing content and performance expectations of the degrees, the role of cross-listed graduate/undergraduate classes, and whether we are adequately preparing the graduates of these programs for the workforce. Lessons from Teaching Aspiring Legislators Thurs. 3:45 – 4:05pm EDT How do we effectively teach aspiring politicians how the institutions they want to occupy work? Is the problem one of knowledge or practice? The panel will report on the Institute for Future Legislators an annual program offered at the University of British Columbia (UBC). This program offers weekend boot camps for aspiring politicians, followed by a model parliament held in the chambers of the British Columbia provincial legislature. We have found that in addition to knowledge and experiential learning, participants must be prompted to reflect on their incentives and motivations after participating in learning to become more deliberative civic practitioners.
