Adapting to COVID with Online and Hybrid MPA Programs: The Case Studies of Tsinghua University and the University of Nevada Las Vegas Thurs. 8:00 – 8:20pm EDT Case studies of Tsinghua University and the University of Nevada Las Vegas examine the adoption of innovative practices for engagement of students in online and hybrid environments. To cope with the COVID-19 outbreak, Tsinghua rapidly took hundreds of courses online and opened all as MOOCs to the public for free, which has no parallel in history. UNLV addresses the challenge of a region suddenly plunged into economic crisis (as tourism ground to a halt), which forced their program to redouble its efforts in online and hybrid planning already underway. Teaching?: How PA Doctoral Programs Are Preparing Students for University-level Teaching Thurs. 4:45 – 5:05pm EDT This panel will focus on how PA doctoral programs are preparing students for university-level teaching, that is, how they are teaching them to teach. It will consider multiple perspectives, including those of doctoral program faculty and directors, current doctoral students, and NASPAA's Institute for Innovative Teaching and Learning for Public Service. PA teacher preparation courses at three universities--NC State, George Washington, and Arizona State-- will be described. Next, opportunities to leverage NASPAA's teaching and learning initiative for doctoral programs teacher preparation efforts will be explored. Finally, insights from doctoral students who recently completed a teacher preparation course will be shared. Jerrell D. The panelists will first discuss the status quo of online education among NASPAA accredited MPA/MPP programs, and then present best practices with offering MPA/ MPP degrees and certificates online as well as preparing full-time and part-time faculty for teaching online.
