Understanding the Cycle of Assessment: Data Col lection, Implementation of

Deans Summit Panel: The Future of Publ ic Pol icy Schools Fri. 4:00 – 4:20pm EDT Some of the earliest professional schools of government were established in the 1920s and 1930s with a focus on public administration, public affairs, and citizenship. Over time, newer schools emerged focused on public policy analysis, while public administration became a subfield of political science at many universities. These developments created tensions between management and administration, policy analysis and economics and policy-making and politics. We will address what we can learn from the founding of these schools, the way they have navigated these tensions, and how they must adapt to a series of new challenges to maintain their relevance. Exploring Civic Responsibility and Community Engagement Inside and Outside the Classroom Fri. 4:00 – 4:20pm EDT Students in the 21st century look to be engaged both inside and outside the classroom, and those of us in public affairs programs have a unique responsibility to teach our students how to bring their education to bear in meaningful ways on their communities. The programs and pedagogies discussed in this panel are unique in two ways: first, their dual existence, both in and outside of the classroom; and second, in how they use the resources and knowledge of public affairs programs to make meaningful differences in the community. Each case demonstrates the connection between service-learning and civic responsibility. Peter S. Government with the People: Reframing Approaches to Teaching and Student Engagement in Publ ic Administration Programs Fri. 4:00 – 4:20pm EDT In the Gettysburg Address, Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the immortal words that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from this earth. Recently, the Kettering Foundation has advanced the idea that what is needed is government with the people, which requires different and innovative thinking around democratic engagement within governments, and accompanying new approaches to preparing students to advance democratic practices in their careers through teaching and engagement opportunities. This roundtable features faculty fromdiverse institutions to consider opportunities, describe new approaches, and identify challenges in facilitating the notion of government with the people. Program Improvement and Adaptation to the Pandemic Fri. 3:30 – 3:50pm EDT Programs seek NASPAA accreditation and use the self-study for program improvement to strengthen their commitment to public administration education. This process requires data. To many programs, the amount of data and data management may seem overwhelming. Four programs, all in different stages in self-study and reaccreditation cohorts, will share how they are striving to improve their programs with the use and management of data.
