Engaging Students to Co-Produce Public Service Learning: Appl ications in Sustainabi l ity, Community Development and Environmental Justice Fri. 5:30 – 5:50pm EDT Students are increasingly being asked to be more actively engaged in the co-production of their public-service learning experience, both by graduate degree seeking programs and potential employers. From direct service-delivery to policy analysis and research, public affairs programs now view service-learning and other hands-on approaches as best-practices to engage students and boost the appeal of their programs. This panel examines the pedagogical lessons learned through the development of engaged courses and real-world projects dealing with local climate change planning, community development and environmental justice. Using a varied approach to highlight activities among diverse groups of graduate students and alumni, you will learn how your program can develop ways for students to make a difference in their communities as well as develop the knowledge, skills, values and motivation to make a difference. You will learn about the need for an ambassador program, how military students perceive civic engagement, how to connect students and alumni through employer partnerships, and a legislative and judicial fellows program. The Dollars and Cents of the New Civic Education: Linking the Publ ic Budgeting & Finance Classroom to Community Fri. 5:30 – 5:50 pm EDT Concerned with who gets what and how, public and nonprofit budgets are more than financial accountings of revenues and expenditures. Instead, budgets and budget-making, have the potential to advance the public policy process and boost democratic governance. During this session, panelists share their ideas for teaching students crucial public budgeting and financial management skills necessary when attending to budgets and the budgeting process to positively influence policy and generate results that enhance the public good.
