INTERLOCKS FOR ALL FIRST-TIME CONVICTED DRUNK DRIVERS

SOBRIETY CHECKPOINTS

ALR

CHILD ENDANGERMENT

NO REFUSAL

Texas has the most drunk driving deaths year after year. Lawmakers should give law enforcement the constitutionally protected option of utilizing sobriety checkpoints to stop drunk driving, as MADD has advocated for more than 20 years. In addition, Texas should require inter- locks for all convicted drunk drivers. TEXAS

Utah is a leader in eliminating drunk driving, but even one death is one too many. Utah is also a leader in the fight against underage drinking with one of the nation’s only statewide anti-underage drinking ad campaigns. They should similarly coordinate anti-drunk driving efforts by appointing a DUI coordinator to make sure all aspects of government are working efficiently and effectively to end drunk driving. UTAH

Vermont became the 48th state to enact an ignition interlock law in 2010 and is trailing the rest of the nation in other areas as well. Vermont should now expand its interlock law to include all convicted drunk drivers and make the punishment fit the crime of driving drunk with a child passenger in a vehicle. VERMONT

For four straight years, legislation requiring ignition interlocks for all convicted drunk drivers passed the Virginia House of Delegates only to be stopped or significantly weakened in the Senate. Virginia’s strong law enforcement efforts and current limited use of interlocks for certain drunk driving offenders has helped save lives, but MADD urges the Senate to take action on more meaningful interlock legislation.
