A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 12
Well done to the Year 12 Textiles and Photography students have now successfully completed their mocks. Feedback on their work will follow in due course.
This week’s enrichment session offered Year 12 students the opportunity to attend the Insight Medical Event or a Personal Statement session for prospective Oxbridge applicants. The Insight Medical Event included the chance to speak to a number of different professionals, including doctors, nurses, midwives, dentists, physiotherapists and paramedics to find out more about what each of these career paths entails. I am certain that the attending students found both sessions extremely beneficial. More sessions focusing on personal statements will run over the course of this half-term and the students will be informed of them by their tutor group Google Classrooms. Our English Literature students visited Keat’s House yesterday, a house museum in North London that was once the home of the Romantic poet John Keats. Also on Thursday, 10 of our students went to Birkbeck College in order to attend the annual World Traders’“World of Work Conference”. The attending students had the opportunity to meet with professionals from a range of industries, as well to get advice on next steps, their CVs, and job interviews. Finally, yesterday after school, we welcomed Simone Finegan, Sustainability Controller at Lindt & Sprungli UK, who spoke to students about Business Ethics. The talk was open to students studying Religion, Philosophy and Ethics, Geography and Economics. I am sure the students who attended found it very interesting. Next week on Monday, the Year 12 Drama students will be performing their practical piece for their A Level exam. I wish them all the best, I am sure it is going to be terrific and am very much looking forward to watching it. We will wave auf Wiedersehen to our Year 12 German students on Wednesday as they will be enjoying a four-day trip to Berlin. They have a really busy itinerary exploring different museums and other attractions in the German capital. I am sure they will all have a fantastic time and get plenty of language practice with the locals.
Have a great weekend!
MR STAVROU, HEAD OF YEAR 12
‘A Room of One’s Own’, by Virginia Woolf This poetically powerful extended essay takes readers on a journey through the history of female writers, as we witness first hand the barriers of structural inequality placed in the path of the female sex. This cornerstone of feminist literature beautifully explores the immense power of personal and feminist interpretation, which cannot be recreated by males with complete literary freedom and space. Woolf’s examination of the patriarchal bookshelves, which leave no room for female narrative voices, ignites a desire to shine a light upon the women who broke the locks placed on literary conventions, finally enabling women to write fiction of their own without interruption. Reading this will transform how you perceive the role of the female voice in literature today. BOOK OF THE MONTH
