Over the Christmas holidays, we often let ourselves be overwhelmed by long lists of errands to run, meals to cook, and evenings to organize. The preparations and festivi- ties fly by, and in the end, we often end up participating in about half of the activities we’d hoped to enjoy. That is why visiting
a beloved senior should be at the top of the list, so that nothing prevents us from spen- ding time with him or her. As we age, family members disperse and develop new interests. For seniors, friends become fewer and farther between, while loneliness and isolation grow over the years. This is difficult to cope with at any time of year, but it is particularly so during the festive season. Whether they are our parents or grandparents, it’s important to visit seniors or invite them to take part in our celebrations so they are not alone over the holidays. If you don’t have any elderly relatives, you could volunteer a few hours of your time and visit some seniors who otherwise wouldn’t receive any visitors. A couple of hours could make a huge difference to them and give them a lot of joy and comfort. We get so caught up in our busy lives that we often neglect the ones who cared for us and spoiled us throughout most of our lives. Now it’s our turn to make some time to pamper them. It is the most precious gift that we can offer them.
