visitors to an informative sidewalk view of the town’s Victorian architecture. Dorothy Smith, author of “The Community and the Fair: Vankleek Hill, West Hawkesbury Town- ship and the Agricultural Fair, 1900 to 1950,” will be at the community centre to answer questions about her study of the Vankleek Hill Agricultural Society and Fair and its longstanding relationship with the local community. After two years of intensive re- search, Dorothy has great insights into the community history of our area. The event is hosted by the Vankleek Hill and District His- torical Society as a fundraiser for the Musée Vankleek Hill Museum.

Grits excited by new “Trudeaumania”

People who recycle do it over, and over, and over.

Richard.mahoney@eap.on.ca HAWKESBURY | Like their counterparts across the country, Glengarry-Prescott- Russell Liberals are excited by Justin Trudeau’s bid for the leadership of the federal party. While the riding association will not for- mally endorse a candidate, some members have already indicated their support for the son of the late Pierre Trudeau. “He will give new energy to the party,” says Hawkesbury Mayor René Berthiaume, who along with Councillor Alain Fraser at- tended the launch of Trudeau’s campaign in Montréal. “It was an historic moment. I was glad to be there,” says Berthiaume, a former riding association president and a former candidate. Trudeau will help Liberals draw new

people, particularly young people, to the party, allows Berthiaume. Former MP Don Boudria is helping to organize the cam- paign for Trudeau, who is believed by many to represent the best hope of resur- recting the party. Meanwhile, GPR riding association presi- dent Connor Quinn notes that the associa- tion will not officially support any contend- er. Every member will have a right to vote for the leader, he notes. “The association may be defined by its high percentage of members supporting a particular candidate, however, a formal vote will not take place in order to avoid misrepresenting a given member of our as- sociation who does not necessarily agree with the way the majority vote in GPR,” he says.
