Safer Communities: THE IMPACT OF THE AFRICAN AMERICAN OPIOID COALITION
I n the pursuit of fostering safer and healthier communities, the African American Opioid Coa- lition (AAOC) within Safe Communities stands as a beacon of hope for improving the wellness of Black families in Dane County. Comprising dedicated Black leaders committed to combating drug harm, the AAOC aims to address the impacts of opioid addiction, enhance community awareness, and advocate for policies that uplift and protect Black families. Central to the mission of the AAOC is the unwavering commitment to enhancing the overall well- ness of Black families through education, advocacy, and community engagement. By shedding light on the disproportionate impacts of opioid addiction within the African American community, the coalition strives to empower individuals with knowledge, resources, and support to navigate the challenges of substance misuse and promote holistic well-being. Additionally, the AAOC advocates for equitable representation and inclusion in policy discussions, ensuring that Black voices have a prominent seat at the table to shape decisions that impact their communities. The statistics provided by the AAOC underscore the urgency of addressing substance misuse within the Black community. With alarming figures such as 50% of prescription opioids misused by African Americans obtained from friends or relatives, a 3x higher overdose death rate among Dane County’s Black residents compared to their White counterparts, and a staggering 575% increase in cocaine and opioid mortality in Black individuals, the need for targeted interventions and support services becomes increasingly apparent.
