Crow Canyon 2024 Annual Report

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CHAIR

• Read about our ongoing partnership with Hopi archaeologist Lyle Balenquah whose work invites others into respectful relationships with ancestral landscapes shaped by science, story, and spirit. • Witness the impact of our student programs where immersive experiences foster cultural understanding and scientific inquiry. • Hear why Dr. Justin Lund (Diné) returns year after year to Crow Canyon to share knowledge and perspective as an Indigenous Scholar in Residence. • Learn why training and mentoring interns is one of the most important jobs at Crow Canyon. • Understand why the topic of Indigenous Data Governance is so critical for conversation and collaboration. • Receive our gratitude for you—our beloved community, our family—for your enduring support for, participation in, and dedication to the Crow Canyon mission. We’re grateful for your belief in this work, especially now. As the world continues to shift, one thing is certain: Crow Canyon is here to stay. We will continue to cultivate respect, elevate Indigenous voices, and help create a more informed, inclusive, and ethical future. We welcome you in partnership as we forge ahead with purpose, clarity, and compassion. In gratitude,

As we share this 2024 annual report, we do so with a deep sense of responsibility and renewed resolve to pursue our mission. While this report reflects back on 2024, it’s impossible to separate that reflection from the realities of our present moment in 2025. A cross the country, cultural and educational institutions like ours are being tested. Crow Canyon is no exception. The work we do to center Indigenous histories, protect cultural landscapes, and foster intergenerational learning is at risk. Our scientific research faces new challenges and budget cuts. Many of the partners we work with, communities we serve, and lands we explore are similarly in danger. Remarkably, these circumstances have brought greater clarity to our organization and commitment to the values that influence our work: respect, inclusivity, collaboration, accountability, ethics, and honoring diverse knowledge systems. These aren’t just “guidelines,” they are at the core of everything we do. This work is not easy, and it is not performative. It requires patience, vulnerability, and sincerity to build deep trust and long-term relationships. We will not waver in our mission or retreat from external pressures. Together with our partners and those we serve, we advance— stronger, united, and purposeful. With open hearts and open minds, we continue to educate, train, and build community rooted in mutual care and shared knowledge. This report is a reflection of these long- standing values in action and a reminder of why they matter now more than ever.
